Nehru told Parliament that some Chinese troops had withdrawn from the frontier. The New China News agency said frontier guards left two positions at Chita and Samuweierh in line with China’s cease fire proposals of November 21.
General Nehru comments on a partial Chinese withdrawal near disputed borders while lorries move back at some positions. He said China would not leave Indian territory without being pushed out and that India would not begin talks until troops are behind the September 8 1962 line.
H.M.A.S. Gascoyne returns to Sydney after a 6 500 mile reconnaissance along Australia's northeast islands. During a five week cruise the frigate inspected 37 reefs and island groups in the Coral Sea and Gulfs of Papua and Carpentaria and hauled up sharks shot by Lieut Rex Lyons RN.
The Canberra branch of the Australian Hotels Association increased prices to cover rising costs including three weeks annual leave for employees. President Kennedy hopes the 1,113 prisoners of the abortive 1961 invasion will be released for Christmas. A barter deal, arranged by lawyer James Donovan, ties their release to privately supplied medicine and baby food valued at about 7.5 million pounds at U.S. prices. None of the prisoners defected under stern conditions.
