The Australian National University will establish an Asian Fellowship to honor the King of Thailand’s visit. Pro-Chancellor Dr. H. Coombs announced at a luncheon that leading Asian scholars would be invited to undertake research or teaching at ANU.
Royal luncheon marks launch of the Asian Fellowship proposed by Dr. Coombs to bring Southeast Asia and Australia closer. King Bhumibol praises ANU ties while visiting John Curtin School of Medical Research and attending a luncheon at University House.
Queen Sirikit wore diamond earrings neck lace bracelets and a Paris pink delustred satin gown with a sleeveless bodice richly embroidered in silver. She matched shoes and white gloves as the King and Queen entered the ballroom at Government House last night.
In Newport Rhode Island a joint statement by Prime Minister Macmillan and President Kennedy urged action to end nuclear tests. Sweden’s Uppsala Institute detected a Soviet test in Novaya Zemlya, estimated at 14 to 150 megatons, as Geneva talks advanced a partial ban and Dean outlined terms.
Queen Sirikit visited Hill Corner Pre-School Centre in Canberra with the Interior Minister. Hundreds of mothers and children gathered in cold winds for a glimpse of the queen. She later attended a luncheon at Hotel Canberra hosted by Dame Pattie Menzies and toasted Dame Pattie. Sirikit expressed interest in welfare work and learning about Australian women.
Sir Dallas Brooks hosted a royal dance where the Queen led the first dance with the administrator. King Bhumibol watched as the Central Band played six tunes he composed. Queen Sirikit wore a Paris pink gown with heavy diamond jewelry. Supper featured lobster and champagne as guests dined by candlelight.
The United States provided Emperor Haile Selassie with a refurbished ship dubbed a floating palace with air conditioning and gold wallpaper in the staterooms. Congressmen question whether the U S will furnish a flagship for every world ruler as the vessel cost over 1 328 000 pounds to remodel and train a crew.
Sydney reports singing star Johnny O'Keefe is seriously ill at Prince Alfred Hospital. His wife says visitors are not allowed and notes he was admitted last week for a nervous breakdown.
