A Soviet note to Britain and the United States accuses the Western Allies of breaching the 1945 air communications agreement with West Berlin. Observers say the note threatens air links to the isolated city and heightens Berlin crisis tensions.
Allied and Soviet tensions escalate as August measures seal East and West Berlin borders. Western tanks patrol a 25 mile frontier, while West Berlin imposes checkpoints and passes to curb East Berliners. Mayor Willy Brandt condemns the move as infamy and a ban on West Berliners entering East Berlin.
The note accuses the United States Britain and France of abusing access to air corridors in West Berlin and violating the 1945 agreement. It claims Western powers transfer officers and equipment, heightening tension and jeopardizing civilian needs and postwar arrangements.
Woolworths Ltd announces acquisition of the Rockmans chain for around 5 million pounds. The deal expands Woolworths to 558 stores in Australia with 70 Rockmans outlets to be integrated or converted. Chief executives Mr To Kelly and Mr Stanley Korman discuss payment in Woolworths shares, mortgage assumptions, and staff retention.
The ACT branch of the Administrative and Clerical Officers Association will bring a test case in Supreme Court to challenge the Commonwealth Homes Rent Ordinance as it applies to Canberra dwellings. Rents may rise by 1 to £2 and affect over 5,000 homes and flats from the first fortnight of next month. The union seeks a restraining order against applying increases pending the hearing and will safeguard members from intimidation for public statements.
The Australian Labor Party strengthens its ban on unity tickets linking members with other parties. Expulsion follows if a member’s name appears. to avoid it, the member must publicly deny involvement via newspaper ad and a statutory declaration if prompted by officials. The measure targets Victorian unity tickets amid election tensions.
Washington reports the United States says the Soviet rejection of a draft treaty to end nuclear testing would invite resumption of tests. The policy statement urged the USSR to push for a nuclear test ban for humanity’s sake as Geneva talks resume, warning of responsibility if the Soviet side spurns the treaty.
