Angry demonstrations flared on both sides of the closed Berlin border last night and today. Russian and American troops have been alerted to face more trouble as officials called the situation extremely critical. A West German government spokesman said the crisis was highly dangerous.
East and West Berlin tension escalated as police used tear gas and bayonets to control crowds near the border. West Berlin youths clashed with authorities while hundreds of demonstrators faced barbed wire barricades and advancing troops. Western and Soviet spokesmen vowed protests and measures as officials in London Bonn and Washington weighed responses to the border’s closure.

Australia saw a easing in unemployment growth in July with registered unemployed rising 1,758 to 113,439 and benefit recipients up 4,145 to 61,439. Lending extended by 14.58 million last month increases total loans to 1 034 million by end of July.
