Police hunt about 20 masked gunmen after Britain's largest post train robbery. The Glasgow to London Travelling Post Office was ambushed near Aylesbury, with around 120 sacks of mail including diamonds and cash believed stolen. No injuries reported.
Robbers pierced the traveling post office trains disabling the line and forcing the crew to drive to a lonely bridge. They tied postal workers, unloaded coaches, and tipped mail into waiting lorries before escaping in a truck. Police set roadblocks as drivers Jack Miller and Whitby were hospitalized.
A £44 million Moonie-Brisbane pipeline advances to the halfway point on a 190 mile route to the Brisbane River refinery. Engineers report most of the line is buried and will remain undisturbed for 20 years through farmland northwest of Pittsworth.
Australia becomes the first nation to sign the US led test ban treaty in Washington. Sir Howard Beale and Sir Eric Harrison signed on behalf of Australia as officials prepared for London Moscow and Washington signings. United Nations Secretary General hailed the pact as a potential breakthrough toward broader disarmament and reduced nuclear testing.
President Kennedy stays in Boston as Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, born 5 weeks early at Otis Air Force Base hospital, fights a serious respiratory ailment in an incubator. Doctors report the condition stable overnight. Mrs. Kennedy in excellent health.
Justice Dunphy issues a 33 page reserved judgement granting variations to leases for three blocks to enable a motel site and a guest house. North Rock Investments Pty Ltd paid £60 550 for the blocks with options to purchase. Objects included Byrne Hordern and Read oppose. Youngs oppose the guest house plan. The ruling includes car park restrictions beside block 4 5 fence and cites the National Capital Development Commission report. Continued on Page 9.
Britain’s Foreign Secretary Lord Home addressed a large Soviet TV audience pledging that the three power agreement on nuclear tests makes the world safer for children and unborn generations. He urged cooperation not just coexistence and called for lasting peace through organized effort and built confidence.
A car plunged 800 ft down a cliff on the Alpine Road near the Murray One Power Station. Four men were killed Tomislav Kral Jevic 57 Mirco Kulis 28 and two others named Stife Batinic 23 and Koban. A search party found three bodies at the bottom and Batinic unconscious then conscious at the roadside. Police say watches stopped about 8.10 p.m. indicating time of impact.
