Dutch, Indonesian negotiators set August signing target

Dutch and Indonesian negotiators agreed on an August sign date for transferring West New Guinea to Indonesia. A plebiscite for the Papuan people was planned after several years of Indonesian control, with May 1 next year tentatively set for completion of the transfer.

Air Force Officers Visit Naval College To Observe Fleet Exercises

A 22 member R.A.A.F. party from Fairbairn visits the Royal Australian Naval College at Jervis Bay. They observe fleet flying and maneuvers from the flagship Melbourne and aircraft carrier. The group departs Fairbairn early today and returns to Canberra tonight.

First Snow Brings Colder Weather to Canberra Region

Snow fell across Canberra city and suburbs with Mount Ainslie and Black Mountain briefly blanketed. It is the first recorded snowfall at Fairbairn Weather Station since August 1960, with three inches on Mount Uriarra and heavy falls on surrounding ranges. Roads into Brindabella towns blocked. ski resorts report good conditions for the weekend amid cold, gusty westerlies and a high of 49. Snow also reached Goulburn and Cooma Road hills.

Satellite system within 10 years predicted in Britain

London report says a universal satellite communications system could be operating in seven to ten years. Postmaster General Reginald Bevins told Parliament yesterday he was replying to a Commons question on Telstar's future uses.

Six fail to agree on farm policies in Brussels talks

In Brussels the Six failed to resolve how to clarify Common Market farm proposals for Britain and Commonwealth interests. A 24 hour meeting ended without progress, with another session planned as negotiators race to a membership decision by week’s end. Heath returned to London asserting pledges to the Commonwealth remain.

Building checks and lease suspensions in Red Hill and Campbell

The department may request explanations from Jessees over auctioned blocks with some leases surrendered. Investigations target Red Hill and Campbell where many leases are bare or only foundations. Some houses are partly built and leases require six months to start and a completion period.
