Governor General Lord De L'Isle takes salute as 70 marchers finish Anzac Day commemoration. Detachments from Australian Armed Forces march past. Lord De L'Isle lays wreath during the ceremony.
Fifteen thousand people from Australia and overseas attended a sunlit Anzac Day service in the National Capital. Leaders including Viscount De L Isle and Governor General performed wreath layings at the Stone of Remembrance as ex soldiers and service detachments stood in memory of the fallen. The service featured Royal and Commonwealth flags, and a Nation’s Remembrance address followed by the Reveille.
An estimated 150,000 servicemen joined Amac Day marches in capital cities, with thinner ranks and shorter steps as World War I veterans led crowds. The oldest participant, aged around 100, walked long blocks to the Sydney site, highlighting enduring wartime memory.
About 20 000 people began a route from Martin Place to the Domain with 26 000 veterans joining a dawn march. General Sir John Northcott led Gallipoli veterans. thousands gathered, many wailing, as participants moved past the ceremony in Sydney.
President Kennedy ordered the start of nuclear tests in the Central Pacific as soon as possible. An Atomic Energy Commission spokesman said tests were almost certain to begin tomorrow with about 12,000 personnel and a large fleet of ships and aircraft prepared for weeks.
U N appeal and U Thant press urged nuclear powers to refrain from testing while Japan urged halt to resumption. Prime Minister Ohira protested tests on humanitarian grounds as Socialist party planned sit in outside United Ships Eibans. Soviet officials warned any further tests would prompt a response of weapon development if the West persists.
A solemn Anzac Day dawn ceremony features the Royal Military College band and churches leading hymns at the memorial cloisters. Speakers highlight the Kokoda Trail inscription and the imperative to strive, seek, and find in today’s battles, with wreaths placed on the Stone of Remembrance by Canberra Returned Services Womens Sub-Branch and the Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand.
