Russia at Geneva accuses the U.S. plan for total disarmament of keeping the world under a permanent nuclear threat. Russian delegate Zorin questions the plan’s effectiveness and warns Moscow may walk out if the United States resumes nuclear tests.
U S officials push ahead with nuclear test series in the Pacific as talks with the Soviet Union stall. President Kennedy signals readiness to resume tests if a nuclear ban treaty gains Russia's agreement by late April. Zorin voices disarmament doubts at Geneva while protests erupt outside the U S Embassy in London.
Police have no lead on the saboteur responsible for a gelignite explosion at 11.5 p.m. damaging £50,000 of machinery at Besser Vibrapac Ltd in Darra. A previous blast on April 29 last year caused £5,000 damage to the same cement block making machinery, with 13 sticks of unexploded gelignite found in the machine. Extensive inquiries failed to identify the saboteur as the fuse burnt out. The blast nearly wrecked a 20 ft high area.
Jim Orr and Jim Matthews, World War I veterans, share a moment at the Lions Club Anzac Dinner. Matthews served with the 7th Battalion while Orr, with the 3rd West Australian Engineers, recently moved to Canberra from Sydney. Orr is a Military Medal recipient. Cape Canaveral reports US scientists abandoned plans to correct a faulty brain in the Ranger IV lunar spacecraft ending hopes for the mission.
Space officials report Ranger IV will crash into the moon after failing to respond to ground commands. Telemetry problems and a faulty clock hindered steering, and the probe is expected to hit the lunar surface Thursday evening Canberra time, destroy itself, and halt the ninth shot plan for manned lunar landings.
A £2,000 fishing contest will be held at Port Macquarie on May 13 to raise funds for the Royal New South Wales Institution for Deaf and Blind Children. The Port Macquarie fishing contest committee will organise the event.
Norberto Andrade, 23, one of three Portuguese sailors deserting the Conclaves Zarco, was arrested for failing to report under bond and released after the Minister for Immigration ordered his release. An appeal against deportation to be heard by the High Court next Monday.
Ballarat report of 14 year old Michael Roberts of Victoria Street Sebastopol who plunged over a steep cliff near Piggoreet, about 20 miles from Ballarat. He landed on rocks and vegetation, lay semi conscious in a dry creek bed for over two hours before ambulance attendants rescued him with only minor head and leg abrasions.
British racing driver Stirling Moss was badly hurt in a 100 mph crash at Goodwood Circuit Sussex. Trapped for 30 minutes, he suffered a broken left foot rib head injuries and abrasions and remained unconscious. He was moved to Atkinson Morley Hospital Wimbledon under police escort.
Moscow reports Rumia successfully launched a new satellite to study space radiation. The satellite orbits Earth every 93.8 minutes with no living payload. Cosmos instruments functioned well, according to Moscow Radio updates.
Washington dispatch reports Russia may join a proposed world wide weather watch in outer space. Dr K I Logvinov deputy director of the Soviet Hydro Meteorological Service predicted yesterday that the plan could extend to space weather monitoring and coordination.
