A 28-year-old man was admitted to Canberra Hospital with a lower chest knife wound after alighting from a car in Allara Street Reid about 6.15pm. He was taken by a bystander and was described as in satisfactory condition. A 22-year-old woman faces Canberra Petty Sessions this morning.
Miss Margaret Ann Fulcher, 17, of North bourne Avenue Downer, died Saturday night when the motorcycle she rode as a pillion passenger struck a tree at Weston Park Yarralumia. The rider Colin Owens of Bailey Place Yarralumia remained in serious condition in Canberra Hospital. Meanwhile Hackett racing driver Jen Heaney was taken to Queanbeyan Hospital with chest injuries after his car overturned at the Lakeview hill climb near Bungendore. His condition was listed as satisfactory after transfer to Canberra Hospital. Doctors were operating on Heaney early today with no further report available.
Two Tarnell fighters raided the Karameh area on the east bank of the River Jordan, a Jordanian military spokesman said. Israeli artillery then opened fire on the same area. Early report from Amman.
A $150 million expansion at the Port Kembla steelmaking complex of Australian Iron and Steel Limited is to be financed by normal company methods. Retained earnings and borrowings will cover the project over several years. BHP indicated no immediate capital plans beyond this.
In Melbourne a major expansion was announced for Port Kembla steelworks highlighted by a new blast furnace costing about 40 million. The project aims to raise capacity to 54 million ingot tons, add a new steel making shop, ovens and rolling extensions, with completion in two to three years. NSW Government pledges full cooperation.
Nigerian forces nine miles from Umuahia advance toward Biafra capital with two battalions, armoured cars, and heavy artillery. Umuahia could be within artillery range though no shelling yet. Reports place fighting near Usrukoli, twelve miles north, as Red Cross says East German pilots may be aiding in the push.
Melbourne and Perth reports quote Defence Minister Lynch and Prime Minister Gorton saying Australian forces remain needed in Vietnam. Lynch notes a specific, ongoing mission and dismisses immediate withdrawal discussions despite US pullouts. Gorton stresses a small but balanced force and unlikely major reductions this year.
Army headquarters in Canberra announced two Australian soldiers were killed and six wounded in South Vietnam on Friday and Saturday. Private Lyall Hugh McPherson, 21, of Belmont WA, died near Bien Hoa with elements of the 9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Wounded were Private Robert George Fitts, 22, Broken Hill NSW, in satisfactory condition at the First Australian Field Hospital, Wang Tai. Private Alexander Remely jel, 21, Rostrevor SA, killed in Phuoc Tuy province. and the wounded Ian David Williamson 22 Northparamatta NSW, serious. Lance-Corporal Peter Robert Gold 21 Marino SA, satisfactory. Corporal Humphrey Michael Gregory 24 Highgate Hill Qld, on duty. The Friday casualties came from the 5th Battalion RAR.
The first snow of the season covered the Snowy Mountains with light falls up to Seaman's Hut and Smiggin Holes. Snow began Saturday night around 6,500 feet and persisted briefly in Smiggin Holes while Thredbo reported sleet and cold conditions. Canberra forecasts show light NW winds, cloud, rain later and a high of 62.
Radio Hanoi reports the Vietcong laid out three basic peace principles. They demand the United States end aggression and withdraw its troops unconditionally, and call on the South Vietnamese government to end its role in betraying the nation. The broadcast denounces President Thieu’s proposal as a US-backed cover for aggression.
Vice-President Ky of South Vietnam said Bangkok that Saigon could begin replacing US troops by the end of 1969 though the war would not end soon. He spoke during transit from Paris where Saigon headed peace talks and warned rapid Communist gains must be resisted.
Australian commentator B A Santamaria warned on a television program that a US pullout from Asia would undermine South Vietnam pledges and devalue American commitment elsewhere. He argued Nixon’s policy would be to limit American power to defend core US interests, not broader Southeast Asian or Australian concerns. He urged Australia to build its own South East Asia alliance and strengthen defences rather than rely on American protection.
The Australian Federation of Credit Unions plans a clearing house for interstate fund transfers and studies a proposal for a workers bank. In Mid East news, Prime Minister Were Meir states King Hussein’s peace plan isn’t genuine, as reported on pages 3 and 5.
The British Foreign Secretary Mr Stewart denied that Anguillan commissioner Mr Lee has been sacked. This denial comes as part of a broader law listing across pages 8 to 10 including weddings and classifieds.
A 26-year-old soldier is to appear in Liverpool Court following the death of 11-month-old Jody Peters who had been unconscious in hospital for three days. The man faced a malicious wounding charge and was remanded on $500 bail. police warned a more serious charge could follow if death was confirmed. The soldier and baby were not related.
