Paris reported overwhelming public backing for the Algerian peace agreements and a confidence vote in President De Gaulle and his four year regime. In Algeria, Secret Army Commandos seized Oran morning newspapers in a bold propaganda stunt to keep Algeria French.
Gunmen seized printers at two plants and forced workers to publish propaganda on the back pages of the Echo and Republican. The pages urged support for de Gaulle and a pro French Algeria stance. Official returns showed high turnout and close results with Algeria self determination referenced.
Three armed bandits including Joseph Voss and Aubrey Droughill were sentenced to prison for holding up a Camberwell City Council employee and stealing a £4623 payroll. Voss received six years before parole eligibility. Droughill and Baysin assigned shorter terms. The judge said penalties protect workers handling large sums.
Sydney officials report a possible oil discovery at Kings Cross after seepage through shop floors in Darlinghurst Road. An oil flow from a basement site diminished, with samples taken by a service station, Water Board, explosives department, and Australian Gas Fight Company. A separate report notes the official coaxial cable link ceremony between Sydney Canberra and Melbourne led by Prime Minister Melbourne and Dr Nathan at Hotel Canberra.
The Minister for the Interior directed Canberra police to avoid influencing drivers or owners when selecting tow trucks. An inquiry, launched in February, found one operator had long operated in Canberra and held many on call tow trucks, with no evidence of police receiving benefits from any operator.
A new shelter scheme at a parkland location 488 Lane will house up to 12 people with cabins for children and separate wings for staff and offices. The project contracted to John Howard and Carry Ltd for 37383 pounds aims for completion early next year with over 2000 pounds earmarked for special landscaping and security measures.
The £5 million Sydney Canberra Melbourne cable opens with a ceremony in all three cities. Lord Mayors Jensen and Nathan inaugurate the system watched by about 200 eavesdroppers including Prime Minister Menzies and ministers. The 600 mile backbone links calls and TV relay, with 97 extra channels prewired Sydney to Canberra.
