Yeomen varsity players coach eight youth flag football teams for four to five players each over five weeks. Fourth to sixth graders and first to third graders gain guidance from high school leaders as practice and games run Sundays at Cameron Junior High fields.
Cameron Cowboys pee wee team opened with a 34-6 win over the Blue Jays but forfeited due to a player weight limit. Highlights include Jacob Ayers scoring twice and a late defensive stand, while 21 players and coach Quin ton Wells praised the effort. Next game at Caldwell Junior High Saturday.
Rockdale's defense has limited opponents to 84 passing yards and 555 rushing yards this season as the Yeomen prepare for a high scoring test against the Tigers. Coach Rhoades calls it a marquee matchup and notes Rockdale’s explosive offense versus Rockdale’s stingy defense. The Tigers mix formations from spread to I and wishbone, while the Yeomen rely on a spread attack and big plays. The game at Tiger Field kicks off Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Two area graduates received accolades from Texas A&M University last week. Anna Louise Wiseman, formerly of Cameron, was named to the Distinguished student list for the summer 2009 semester. Wiseman is a senior majoring in construction science. Erin Elizabeth Porsche, of Rogers, graduated in the summer with a degree in animal science.
Lorena trailed 20-10 as the Leopards forced a turnover late in the second quarter. Cameron’s Tyrell Goss intercepted Sims on a late drive, shifting momentum to the Yeomen who added a late score. Yeomen head to district start versus Rockdale at Tiger Stadium, 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Milano Eagles overwhelm Giddings State School 38 0 as they rush 51 times for 434 yards under steady rain. Sam Walker opened with a 70 yard burst, Thomas Sanders and Matthew Jentsch each rush for touchdowns, Toby Sanders catches a TD pass as Milano moves to 3-0.
