Cameron voters reject the ordinance to annex extra acreage by a 3 to 1 vote with one abstention. Councilman Mondrik led the rejection while Luecke abstained and Moore abstained. Citizens Shipp and Hillman opposed annexation citing tax concerns and business impact.
A Cameron school bus carrying 32 eighth grade volleyball players from Cameron High overturned on FM 2818 near Bryan. One girl broke an arm and another cut suffered. the rest had bumps and bruises. All treated and released at St Joseph's Hospital Bryan. DPS to inspect bus for safety standards.
The bloodmobile will visit Methodist Fellowship Hall from noon to 6 pm on Wednesday September 28 with a city quota of 75 pints. Mrs. Glenda Moseley notes the city is 30 to 40 pints behind for the year and urges donors. A proposed location is near the library at Fannin and 4th Streets.
Mrs. Marie Spicak prepares a patchwork quilt for display at the Autumn Arts and Crafts Show in Cameron on October 1. The nursing home residents, plus the Senior Citizens group and art students, will exhibit at the Cameron Library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An auction of one item and a miniature Model T car giveaway conclude the day at the City Park pavilion.
Mrs. Eula Solomon, a county tax office employee, fatally wrecked her car when a front seat coffee pot overturned. She grabbed for it around 8 a.m. near the Little River bridge, crossed into a ditch and embankment, and overturned. Damage was extensive. she suffered minor head bumps. The stretch was under highway construction.
Dana Gaye Rodnette of Orange was charged with possession of a forged instrument after attempting to pass a forged prescription at Dusek Pharmacy on Tuesday. Bond was set at $2000 and she remained in county jail.
Janice Diver, a dress factory worker, required stitches for a head cut and hair loss after her hair tangled in a cloth cutting machine at about 3 p.m. Monday. A later 3:30 p.m. Tuesday fire gutted a car at 1007 W 8th St, owned by Lucille Nichols, with cause undetermined.
County commissioners approved the 42.46 million tax roll up 2.5 million from last year and set homestead exemptions. They renewed a contract with Austin State Hospital for county mental health outreach and signed an installment sale with Alcoa for 13.9 million in pollution control and refunding revenue bonds.
