Milam Areans reports Gatesville doctors hire Gatesville Architects and a building contractor to construct a new medical facility beside the new hospital. The center will house ten doctors with clinics and offices and aims to recruit more physicians to join the six already practicing in town.
A Belton man Jimmy Dale Carothers, 18, was killed when his westbound pickup struck a cow one mile east of Gatesville. The truck overturned three times and occupants were ejected. Rosebud welcomes Dr Alfredo Cisneros a Managua born surgeon joining Halbert Hospital and Clinic in Family Practice Medicine.
A county drive begins to raise 32000 for two youth exposition buildings across from city hall, part of a 65000 project funded by pledges and livestock auction proceeds. The effort includes pledges from community groups, bank donations, and a tractor pull event at Ledbetter Park to support the fund. Two prefab structures will provide 12000 and 6000 square feet for livestock pens bleachers and events.
In its third year the Texas Family Land Heritage Program names Milam County recipients Mrs. Belle Whittington Dragon and Charlie R. Duncan and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Stiles. Agriculture Commissioner John C. White notes 160 properties this year and over 1 000 since the program began. An honors day will be held October 8 at the Dallas State Fair with certificates.
Rockdale Fair plans an arts and crafts show October 22 to 24 with Ruth Johnson as arts and crafts chair. 10 by 10 booths will be rented 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday October 23 for Central Texas artists at $8 each. registrations go to Johnson or call 512 446 3704.
Rep Dan Kubiak says he will sponsor a bill to cut the school term from 180 to 171 days when the 65th Legislature meets. He cites cooler start dates and cost savings while stressing salaries remain unchanged.
The Cameron Volunteer Fire Department, 32 members strong, elects Cliff Marburger as president and Alfred Dusek as first vice president with other officers named. First and second year directors, a marshal turned reporter, and plans for Fire Prevention Week are announced along with GED class information at Yee High School. A $61,000 FAA grant funds Runway 16 34 overlay at Cameron Municipal Airpark.
