Cameron City Council opened bids for a sewer line to the non white housing project with Graham Construction Co submitting the low bid of 5900 dollars. Officials also weighed street cleaning after nightly cricket invasions and discussed budget plans for the 1957 58 cycle.
Wacecans travel to Cameron to invite locals to the Heart O' Texas Fair opening parade on Saturday Sept 28. United States Senator Ralph Yarborough will officially open the rodeo. North Waco Rotary Club members ride the bus with Bob Gorham as chairman. Balloons and souvenirs will be distributed and free grounds admission for day one will be sent via schools to 13 Central Texas counties.
Buckholts Latin Club members met at sponsor Mr and Mrs Max McClaren home. Curtis Fuchs was elected president for the year with Sammy Skrhak as vice president Carolyn Mekush secretary La Velle Fischer treasurer Stella Inge reporter Lamar Gresak historian Hal Lester Senkel parliamentarian John D Jones song leader and Clarence McNeil social chairman. Games and refreshments followed.
St Cyril and St Methodius Church in Marak will hold its annual fall church picnic on September 29, as announced by Rev. Rafael Gerskovich, pastor, after a church meeting Sunday. Parishioners confirmed the date at the gathering.
William F. Procter acting district commander presided at Cameron American Legion Post ceremonies in Legion Hut Tuesday night. R. J. Griffin becomes commander, Edwin Kehutek first vice, Wesley G. Fogle second vice, with six more officers for 1957-58 including Carrol N. McElwrath Edward J. Manning John E. Boyce W. R. Whitey and Clarence E. Rummel.
Byron Ray Walston weighed seven pounds ten ounces at birth on September 6 in a Houston hospital to Mr and Mrs Clarence H Walston of Houston. The Walstons formerly lived on Route 4 in Cameron and already have a two year old son named Steven.
Sept Wiley Loughmiller announced season football tickets are on sale daily until 4 pm at Ben Milam School offices. Tickets cost five dollars for five home games.
The O L White family from 706 Polk Cameron has nine children starting school. Supt Loughmiller notes it is the largest single-home pupil group in the Cameron system. The siblings range from first to ninth grade with three triplets among them.
Disabled American Veterans Chapter No 18 in Cameron thanks donors for a Saturday flower sale that funded aid for area veterans. Commander Eddie Huntsman says the gesture reflects residents’ sympathy and helps make veterans lives more bearable. Volunteers listed include Barbara Woodum Jane Monroe Jolene Weid Sandra Fuller Linda Angell Carol Ann Crook and Kay Bridges.
Rev O F Dingler executive of Texas Alcohol Narcotic Education Inc will speak at First Baptist Cameron at 11 a m Sunday. He has pastored churches in Austin Beaumont and other Texas cities and heads legislative and public relations for TANE. All are welcome.
Cameron Quarterback Club elected Calvin Markham president succeeding Bob Nelson. New officers include vice president Dr. Robert M. Titsworth and secretary treasurer Rube Johnson. The group joined Cameron Jaycees to boost the Brenham football train and discussed ticket sales at 2 dollars for adults and 1 dollar for children under 12. The VHS band will travel to Brenham, 65 miles away, for the game.
The 42 Leisure Club met at Mrs. Henry McLane's home with guest Mrs. Jim Crouch. Mrs. Leo Fuchs led the business meeting as reports from secretary Mrs. Leo Laake and treasurer Mrs. August Kunz were presented. A social hour followed by 42 games. High scorers were Mesdames Jim Crouch and P. L. Bergum with Mrs. Kunz at 84.
Folschinsky Grocery, destroyed by last week’s fire at 600 block West Bette, will reopen at a new site on West Main Street across from the Southern Pacific Depot. The adjacent office of the Negro county agent also burned.
The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary announces a meeting next Tuesday at 7 30 p m at Mrs R L Batte Sr home. Plans will be discussed for a memorial service honoring charter members Mrs Helen Tyson and Mrs D H Obermiller.
Cameron Volunteer Firemen Association elected Edwin Kohutek president succeeding Henry Michalka who becomes vice president. John Andres was chosen secretary treasurer. Other officers include physician C G Swift chaplain Alfred Kallus and mascot Mike Mikula. Directors for 1957 58 named William C Black Joe Humplik Thomas Kirk David Perkins John A Smith and Dean White. The meeting was at the fire station.
Milam Lodge of Knights of Pythias and families gathered for a monthly family night at the lodge. Members voted to hold the event on the second meeting night each month with a program and potluck covered dishes.
Brenham football fans can buy train tickets through the Cameron Jaycees and Quarterback Club for a September 20 trip to Brenham. A pregame rally and bonfire are planned in Cameron on September 19, with a parade from the courthouse to Lawless Green. Tickets cost 2 for adults and 1 for children under 12. train departs Cameron 6 p.m. Friday and returns after the game.
The Cameron Yeomen host Rockdale Tigers at 8 p.m. in the annual bell trophy clash on Yoe Field in the first Milam County meeting since 1955. Cameron fields a veteran lineup while Rockdale aims to rebound from a 7-0 defeat, with scouts naming two key Rockdale players as threats.
Buckholts six man squad, defeated by Oakwood Friday 25 to 0, hosts Hutto at Buckholts field at 8 p.m. Buckholts fumbled often and aims to rebound. Oakwood’s Jimmy Smart shone with multiple TD runs and high scoring. The game uses a six eight man format split by halves.
Funeral services for Mrs. Walter K. Harris 79 will be held at 2 pm today at Marek Burns Funeral Home. The Rev. Aubrey Russell will officiate and burial is in Walkers Creek Cemetery. Born August 8, 1878 in Norfolk Virginia, she moved to Texas as a child and was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons Will Harris and James W Bud Harris. three daughters Mrs. George Gamble Miss Verna Harris and Mrs Verne Miller. one brother Henry Hill. two sisters Mrs. Will Vaughn and Mrs J W Wilkerson. six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mr. and Mrs. David F. Robinson celebrated their 0th wedding anniversary at their Minerva home on September 1. The Milam County town is named after Mrs. Robinson’s grandmother. They married September 4, 1907, with guests from Cameron including J. S. Hubert and C. S. Terry.
Mrs C N Dodson Comperea returned from the Dallas Jewelry and Gift Show and attended the opening of the First State Bank in Hearne over Labor Day weekend where cr 80a in law is now cashier. Her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Thomas Brashear moved to Hearne two weeks ago.
