A reader asks for the date and stipulations of the Latin Union treaty and for changes in US coinage law. The Latin Union treaty was signed in Paris on December 23, 1865 and took effect August 1, 1866 with later ratifications through 1867. It provided mutual recognition of coins and free coinage at the market ratio of 16 to 1 until silver’s market value collapse in 1877. US coinage history notes acts in 1786, 1792, 1834, and 1837 altering gold and silver ratio and fineness, including free coinage and adjusted weights.
A historical remark notes a new ratio of 15.988 to 1 and recalls that the nation has never coined gold and silver free at 16 to 1. It references the 1873 law suspending free coinage of silver, passed on April 1.
