Austin officials report Comptroller H B Terrell orders warrants paid directly to creditors. The move ends the former practice where business managers issued and paid monthly bills from their own accounts.
The Saturday crowd in Cameron was among the largest in the town’s history as the cotton market prospered. High cotton prices and a short crop boosted sales of flour sugar coffee bacon and groceries, with locals urged to plant less cotton next year and raise hogs instead.
Mrs. Oxsheer Smith entertained the 42 club last Thursday with three tables of play. Guests Mesdames R. D. Brown and Vernon McIntyre attended, 24 favors including tiny suitcases handbags hats and banjoes were awarded to winners, followed by an ice and salad course.
The Herald earns strong commendation for a front page article published last week. Several farmers who were considering planting plans praised the piece for its clear guidance and helpful insight.
The Herald urges farmers to reduce cotton area and diversify with hogs, corn and feedstuff. It argues a heavier cotton crop next year would depress prices, predicting better than fifteen cents per pound if farmers follow the policy and stay closer to home.
Mr and Mrs C C Carnes traded their Cameron property for a fine farm near Kenedy and left last week for their future home. The Herald regrets their departure but extends best wishes for cheerful residence in their new locale.
Milam County docket lists cases with Nov. 16 to Nov. 29 trial dates including Ike Looney vs Ben Arnold Mercantile Co. and Albert Behne vs S A P Ry Co. with various attorneys. also judgments by default for several entries and real estate transfers. Marriage licenses issued include Annie Svetlik Herman Glaser and Yank Matthews Swanson Francis Park. Auto registrations show multiple entries.
The Rookery young men and visiting friends enjoyed a grand hay ride and a possum hunt last Thursday evening. A surprise lunch followed after the woods at Atkin sons pasture were explored and a live possum captured with Mrs. Claude McGregor chaperoning this enjoyable event.
Frank Kleiber and Millis Kovar of Ad Hall wed at the Catholic Church on Tuesday October 26 1915 officiated by Rev Father Simion Spinneweber. The Herald congratulates them and wishes a long happy life. Prof Joe Reineke leaves for Plantersville Grimes County to take charge of the school.
The Herald notes the Stecher Brothers purchased Dude Tucker's stock and expect to build one of Cameron's largest grocery stocks. Antone Stecher, formerly with Law Sprinkle, brings a strong following. Prof Edgar Newton and Mrs Newton of Milano visited Cameron, praising local school progress under Newton's instruction.
On Saturday evening October 23 Mr and Mrs Hugh Looney hosted a farewell reception for Mr and Mrs L L Blaylock as part of Branchville society notes. The event highlighted local social activity with neighbors and club members in attendance.
A large gathering of friends and club members for a departure to Cameron featured high scores won by Mrs. L. L. Blaylock Miss Susie Butts Joe Foster and Ralph Looney. Guests enjoyed a salad course praised by the hostess committee. The Ladies Aid of the First Baptist church hosted an oyster supper on Oct 22 1915 benefiting from attendees from Hearne Maysfield Branchville and area.
The Saxophone Club aims to develop musical talent across the town and state. Director EF A Lightfoot offers instrument tuition with flexible payment terms. His Somerville class has quickly drawn crowds, performing at open air concerts within a month of instrument receipt.
The Sigma Phi sisters hosted a Halloween themed gathering at Miss Lily Mag Jeter’s home with Kilkares and young lady teachers as honored guests. Jack o lanterns, black cats, and ghostly symbols lit the scene while a gypsy fortune teller foretold futures. Fortunes, floating apples, and candles followed, then chocolate and cake on the floor, a marshmallow toast, ghost stories by Miss Maude Morrison, and a bonfire talk by Mr. Tom Henderson Jr. From Buckholts, Alex Trigg and Edwin Hardy attended. An oyster supper at Salem School House benefited the school, with proceeds near twenty dollars. Cameron visitors included Mr. J. R. Daily and Mr. Thos. H. Alexander visiting from Kenedy.
A Cameron citizen praised Comptroller Terrell as a capable administrator and argued that if Terrell had been governor for six years Texas would be richer by about three million dollars. The citizen believes Terrell could win a governor race in two years. Prof. H M Roark of Gause visited Cameron but avoided stating concrete political plans, though he hinted at possible future candidacy.
