The National Newspaper Association held a three day convention in Las Vegas described as a colossal light show. The piece notes slot machines gaming tables entertainers and about 1 billion spent yearly on such vices. Glen Campbell is mentioned taking a tennis lesson amid the crowds.
Comptroller Bob Bullock mailed checks totaling 14.2 million to 824 Texas towns and cities for October city sales tax rebates. Cameron reported 2292.92 for September. Rockdale 1162.75. Rosebud 721.27. others noted small payments. He explained September receipts carried over and that initial months skip cities under 500. rebates have benefited cities in early operation.
Absentee voting began October 15 and will close October 3. Voters out of the county on November 4 are urged to cast absentee ballots. Ballots are available at the county clerk's office in the courthouse.

Congressional sources say no action is expected to extend or modify daylight saving. Remember to turn clocks back before bed Sunday night to avoid being late Monday.
Cameron's dog problem moved a step closer after a city council report on actions in Brenham Richardson and Temple. Councilman Gene Lumpkin outlined contacts with these larger cities and noted their approaches may not reflect Cameron's emotional involvement.

Dave Carley aged 42 and a Hearne draftsman died when his single engine plane crashed on Block House Ranch two miles south of Crossroads around 1 p.m. He had just moved onto the ranch on Oct. 14 after taking lessons at Hearne. The Hearne Airport owned aircraft, crash site near the residence, cause under investigation. Carley’s body was moved to Hearts field Funeral Home and then Houston for burial arrangements.
Church Women United announces it will not sponsor the Halloween UNICEF drive in Cameron this year. The group thanks past supporters and urges continued contributions to another organization taking on the responsibility. Traditionally the drive occurred the day before Halloween for the world wide children's fund.
An 86 year old Cyril Plachy was robbed at his North Elm home early Sunday. At least two intruders entered through a back door and stole three clocks a radio quilts and a small amount of cash. Plachy was found gagged and bound and left on the floor in 40 degree weather while all doors were left open. He was taken to St Edward Hospital for observation and was not harmed.
State Senator Bill Patman of Canada will speak at Cameron Noon Lions Club on October 27 about the proposed State Constitution and issues affecting Texas voters. He will also hold public meetings in Cameron and Rockdale on October 27 and 28 to discuss the November 4 vote and provide pro and con information.
