Connally's near miss as Nixon's running mate in Watergate era
The Texan John Bowden Connally Jr. rose from modest roots to Lyndon Johnson's key ally and Texas governor. He backed Nixon's 1969-73 foreign policy, declined the 1972 running mate offer, then faced late GOP attempts to recruit him for the vicepresidency. Nixon favored Ford in 1973, delaying Connally's ascent and leaving him sidelined in a period of party realignment.
