The Chas. Mc Dermott No. 1 deep test well was spudded last Thursday by W. R. Ritchey and associates of Tulsa Oklahoma. The 112 foot derrick rises east of the city and the well sits on the Charles McDermott farm in the Posey Well structure and fault. Flood conditions in Little River bottom halted operations this week while drilling is expected to resume next week.
After ten years the bronze busts of Mr. and Mrs. C H Yoe will be installed at the south entrance to Yee High School. Excavations proceed for the foundation and the gateway will be enhanced by the figures placed at each corner. Funds cover several thousand dollars with contributions from the board federal aid and 288 from the Parent Teacher Association. Installation expected within two weeks.
Charles F Green announces he has bought the C N Green and Son Store in Cameron and will run a close out sale of furniture and hardware at wholesale and below. The sale starts Friday morning October 2 with prices and terms advertised. A Southern Sales and Auction Company rep will supervise the event while the public is shut out all week.
Yeomen backfield star Earl Peck sustained a leg injury in the Cameron Caldwell game last Friday night and will be unable to play in the Thrall game here tomorrow night.
Mondrik IGA Store in Santa Fe town advertises weekly food bargains through Cameron Herald. The long standing family firm of Frank and Joe Mondrik is continued by A J Mondrik and partners. Schuchmacher Company distributes merchandise to IGA stores.
Milam County deputies seized a whiskey still and seventy gallons of mash hidden in a pasture near Conoley about nine miles from Thorndale Monday night. No arrests were made. Hale Center report notes night watchman Lawrence Smith drinks about fifteen cups daily for 25 years.
The Little River subsides after cresting near nine feet above flood stage Tuesday afternoon. By 3 p.m. Tuesday officials noted 38.70 feet, with gradual fall Wednesday though future runoff from the Leon could raise waters again. Crop damage appears limited by cotton shortages, livestock losses small, and Cameron records its highest flood stage since 1921.
Contractors began erecting steel stands at Yoemen field as part of a government project, aiming to have the structure ready for the October 6 game against Courzetown. Work crews were on site Wednesday to advance the long awaited development.
J H Sapp, last ten days at home with typhus fever, was reported improving after galling near death. Dr Eperson said hopes were low last Wednesday but Sapp has regained consciousness and shows signs of recovery without complications.
Mayvile marble machines in Milam County were banned at midnight Sunday and their operation discontinued at the request of District Attorney Camp and Sheriff R M Kennedy. The move aligns with Texas wide action as officials await Austin’s ruling on proposed legislation to legalize and regulate the machines. Cooperation with authorities was complete.
The Yeomen face Thrall in the conference opener on Friday night at Yoomet field. Earl Peek, backfield, is out after being carried off late in the Caldwell game, weakening the backfield. Coach Wood praises a sensational line and predicts a thrilling defensive matchup as Belton Granger Taylor and Rosebud pose the strongest threats.
Plans for a Cameron hotel were dropped amid confusion. A Cottle could not confirm actions taken, while Jim Sampson reportedly eyed a two story business block opposite the Federal building, with his hotel plan tied to the fate of the first plan.
Two pleas of guilty were entered in District Court. Henry Steel pled guilty and received a suspended sentence on a cattle theft charge. Mina Lemons, charged with burglary on two counts, was sentenced to four years total with two years in each case.
Milam County tax rolls totaling 15 202 743 were approved by the Commissioners Court on Tuesday for 2046 37. Judge Jeff T Kemp released a detailed schedule listing taxable properties and each division’s contributed amount, noting utilities property values will be added to the list.
The fall fair premium list for Cameron is set for November 13 to 15 at Wilson Leadbetter Park. The event will be a limited exhibit with plans for a permanently equipped community center for future events.
Coleman Harris, a negro, pleaded guilty in District Court and received a heavy sentence for beating and robbing Pat Harrison, an aged merchant, near Branchville earlier this year. Harrison faces 5 years to life in Huntsville. Harris was arrested in Valley Junction after night attack while Harrison locked his store. money stolen was later recovered in Houston.
District Attorney Camp argued the indeterminate law would keep the prisoner in prison for life. Camp gathered evidence by working through a social rally in Burlington and conducting a full night and following day of investigation. He is said to have scored heavily in other cases by acting immediately and staying on the case until it was cleared.
