Remarkable Texas soldier begins recovery after spinal injury
Marshall Wood of Cameron, Texas, a Private in the 3d Texas Infantry, fractured his spine diving in the Brazos River. He remained paralyzed from the waist down at Fort Sam Houston but showed remarkable improvement after treatment, moving his arms and hands and remaining cheerful. Wood, 22, had served on the Mexican border before enlisting in 1916 and remains in the base hospital as doctors note his unlikely recovery.
