Water Proofing Cables by Air Keeps Lines Dry Says Bell Official
Southwestern Bell’s C. L. Carson explains dry air pumped into underground and aerial telephone cables protects against moisture. Air at 9 psi underground and 6 psi in the air runs between wire strands to dry leaks and prevent garbling. The system uses monitoring stations and compressed air drums to locate and seal tiny leaks while new polyethylene insulated cables resist punctures. Also note: Oregon bans minnow fishing with live bait to reduce rough fish in stocked impoundments.
