Milam County is named in Gov Dolph Briscoe’s request to the USDA for disaster designation along with six other counties. Crop losses total 6.401 million dollars due to drought with 3,000 farmers affected and requests for two million dollars in low interest loans from the Farm Service. Livestock grazing is scarce as stock tanks run low and cattle producers begin early culling.

Texas motorists will see year round registrations starting January 1 1978 with monthly expirations instead of all April 1 renewals. The change aims to cut long lines at county tax offices and will be preceded by mailed application forms after Christmas as part of System 78 by the Motor Vehicle Division.
Mrs Ella Staten of Gause marked her 100th birthday on November 5 with about 250 guests at her daughter Etta Washingtons home. President Carter and other officials sent greetings as did state leaders and Gov Dolph Briscoe. Staten mothered eight children and remains active in Zion Hill Baptist Church and charitable work.
