The Democratic wave delivers victory across Milam County and nationwide as Harry S. Truman wins the presidency with 304 electoral votes to Dewey’s 189. Alben Barkley secures the VP slot and Sam Rayburn is poised to reclaim the Speakership. Dewey concedes from New York as results show Truman leading California and Ohio.
Preliminary Milam County totals show Thurmond leading for president with 2783 votes followed by Lyndon Johnson 615 Jack Porter 293 and 15 unassigned. For U S Senator the tally lists Wallace 2687 and 822 for remaining candidates.
With about half the precincts reporting Milam County shows Democrats ahead in a decisive result while a light turnout limits totals. Early tabulations by County Clerk Homer Nabours list Truman leading Dewey and Thurmond with Johnson near Truman, Porter close behind.
The American Legion Edwin Post No. 9 plans an Armistice Day program with a turkey dinner at Yoe gymnasium. Senator Jimmy Phillips of Angleton will speak while Ww. A. Morrison serves as toast master. VFW Auxiliary will serve, Legionnaires will attend church services November 7, and poppies will be sold to aid veterans’ widows and families.
Cameron merchants will close all day November 11 following a Chamber of Commerce poll. Ex servicemen will hold a noontime dinner at the school gym as Disabled Veterans American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts join a coordinated observance program.
Rockdale voters approve a 120000 bond issue by about four to one to expand water and sewer lines as the city grows. The plan funds extensions for new patrons and an adequate sewerage system, reflecting Cameron’s approval of neighboring progress and cooperation.
The Jeff Kemp Memorial will be dedicated in Sunday morning service at the Methodist Church. The memorial features the organ shield and illuminated cross, a gift from Mrs Rosa Kemp Adams, sister of the late Judge Jeff T Kemp. Bronze plaques will be placed in the church foyer. Judge Kemp served the church from 1891 to 1946. Judge John Watson will pay tribute.
The Burkes Howard Company hosts a free Family Party at the high school auditorium on Saturday November 6 at 7 30 p m. International Harvester dealers showcase five featured entertainers with music comedy and magic as the program. Mr Burkes and Mr Howard invite all families to attend.
Berry C. Caldwell Jr. of Cameron, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Caldwell, entered the Air Force to pursue education and aims to become a radar mechanic. He is one of this year's graduates.
E. P. Brennan, former Milano resident, died at his San Antonio home at 9 p m Monday November 1. News reached Cameron Tuesday. Body to arrive Rockdale 11 a m Tuesday. funeral at 10 a m Wednesday in Hearne Catholic church. Interment Milano cemetery.
Edwin Hardy Post No 9 members meet at the Hut in Wilson Ledbetter Park tonight at 7 30 p m to plan the Armistice Day dinner in Cameron on Thursday November 11. Commander Joe Gerick urges full attendance. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. A celebration for Armistice Day and a big dinner for ex service men and guests is planned.

Writes of John W. Wilson, a Navasota native and Southern Methodist University alumnus, whose first novel High John the Conqueror is published by The Macmillan Company. The 28-year-old author won the Dallas Times Herald Creative Writing Award and has earlier appeared in The Southwest Review and Prairie Schooner.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall will retire as head of the State Department on January 1 after indicating in Paris that he seeks rest. He said no current world events or relations with President Truman dictated the move.
Truman victory lifts Texas Democrats. Senator Tom Connally will regain chair of the Foreign Relations Committee and Representative Sam Rayburn of Bonham becomes Speaker of the House after the GOP takeover.
Mrs. Ernest Andrews formerly of Rockdale is hospitalized in Temple with a broken leg and head injuries after being struck by a car on Highway 36 near Caldwell. The driver Ellis John Cobb, previously from Rogers and now in Houston, faces investigation by Cameron patrolman Jack Gaines. The accident involved two other women who were walking with Mrs. Andrews.
Wayne Hobbs the son of Mrs. L E Mancus Cameron is reported ill and receiving care at Newton Memorial Hospital.
The Democratic Party appears to control both House and Senate as of early returns Tuesday night with estimates showing about 40 House seats gained and a nationwide swing led by labor and farm voters. President Truman leads in 27 states and the party is poised to organize Congress despite Republican opposition.
October building permits in Cameron reached 5089 dollars with most spending on residence construction and repairs. Officials note the year may exceed 1947 as material costs rise and labor remains available, while Dallas reports widespread lay offs and no FHA loans in Cameron due to missing city ordinances.
