Democrats Sweep Nation in Landslide Victory for Truman

The Democratic wave delivers victory across Milam County and nationwide as Harry S. Truman wins the presidency with 304 electoral votes to Dewey’s 189. Alben Barkley secures the VP slot and Sam Rayburn is poised to reclaim the Speakership. Dewey concedes from New York as results show Truman leading California and Ohio.

Preliminary Milam County totals show Thurmond leading for president with 2783 votes followed by Lyndon Johnson 615 Jack Porter 293 and 15 unassigned. For U S Senator the tally lists Wallace 2687 and 822 for remaining candidates.

With about half the precincts reporting Milam County shows Democrats ahead in a decisive result while a light turnout limits totals. Early tabulations by County Clerk Homer Nabours list Truman leading Dewey and Thurmond with Johnson near Truman, Porter close behind.

Armistice Program Planned in City for November 1

The American Legion Edwin Post No. 9 plans an Armistice Day program with a turkey dinner at Yoe gymnasium. Senator Jimmy Phillips of Angleton will speak while Ww. A. Morrison serves as toast master. VFW Auxiliary will serve, Legionnaires will attend church services November 7, and poppies will be sold to aid veterans’ widows and families.

Merchants Close Cameron Stores On Armistice Day

Cameron merchants will close all day November 11 following a Chamber of Commerce poll. Ex servicemen will hold a noontime dinner at the school gym as Disabled Veterans American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts join a coordinated observance program.

Water and Sewerage Extension Bond Approved in Rockdale

Rockdale voters approve a 120000 bond issue by about four to one to expand water and sewer lines as the city grows. The plan funds extensions for new patrons and an adequate sewerage system, reflecting Cameron’s approval of neighboring progress and cooperation.

Kemp Memorial 10 to Be Dedicated Here

The Jeff Kemp Memorial will be dedicated in Sunday morning service at the Methodist Church. The memorial features the organ shield and illuminated cross, a gift from Mrs Rosa Kemp Adams, sister of the late Judge Jeff T Kemp. Bronze plaques will be placed in the church foyer. Judge Kemp served the church from 1891 to 1946. Judge John Watson will pay tribute.

Legion Meeting At Hut To Night Plans Armistice Dinner

Edwin Hardy Post No 9 members meet at the Hut in Wilson Ledbetter Park tonight at 7 30 p m to plan the Armistice Day dinner in Cameron on Thursday November 11. Writes of John W. Wilson, a Navasota native and Southern Methodist University alumnus, whose first novel High John the Conqueror is published by The Macmillan Company. Mrs Ernest Andrews Injured in Highway Hit-Run

Mrs. Ernest Andrews formerly of Rockdale is hospitalized in Temple with a broken leg and head injuries after being struck by a car on Highway 36 near Caldwell. The driver Ellis John Cobb, previously from Rogers and now in Houston, faces investigation by Cameron patrolman Jack Gaines. The accident involved two other women who were walking with Mrs. Andrews.
