In a playful but pointed note, readers debate whether non Texas armadillos may enter the Folk Fete Thoroughbred Armadillo race open until Friday for an 8 mile run on Saturday. Entrants contact Joe White at White's Television in Cameron.
The Memorial Day weekend brought multiple deaths including two drownings in Little River slough and a fatal plane crash. Justice of the Peace Jess Brock ruled accidental drowning for Ray Jensen 54 and Jose Guadalupe Camacho 25, swept from horses during a flood. Tom Jensen survived after clinging to a horse’s tail. Rescue units from Cameron, Rockdale, Hearne, Rosebud, Harris County divers, Fort Hood helicopters, and the DPS assisted in the search and recovery.
Alcoa will shut down a Rockdale Works potline this Saturday May 31 reducing primary aluminum output by 30 000 tons annually and affecting about 100 employees It marks the second idle unit this year raising local layoffs to 230 at the eight potline plant Fred P Bergeron Alcoas Texas manager said other plants including Point Comfort Wenatchee Vancouver Badin Warrick will cut output lowering Alcoas domestic smelting rate to about 74 of capacity 1 5 million tons annually Overall around 500 employees will be affected nationwide already about 232 000 tons removed from production
Cameron school trustees authorized Supt. Buddy Dulin and architect John Allen to draw bids for gym repairs and converting 3000 square feet upstairs into science labs with space for restrooms and concession on the east end. Work will span into the next school year. Allen will prepare specifications next month amid additional staff changes and GED testing details.
Milam County REACT Club again sponsored a Safety Rest Stop over the Memorial Day weekend to aid travelers on the highway. Club members manned six hour shifts from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday 6 p.m. Free coffee cold drinks and cookies welcomed travelers and volunteers thanked sponsors including McVoy Grocery Pig gley Wiggley Brookshire Bros City Food Market Rockdale Coca Cola Bottling Keith's Minimax Citizens National Bank and Ben Milam Savings and Loan of Cameron.
