Jim Connors wins the World Championship of Tennis in Dallas with Stockton second in four sets, earning $100,000 for the title and Derek Hardwick honored for tennis work. Dallas hosts a star-studded reception with Connors praising the city.
Census figures show Milam-Areans Rosebud shrinking from 1,597 in 1970 to 1,564 in 1973, with latest data listing 1,496 residents. The Treasury department notes continue to chart a declining city population.
Two Granbury women are jailed in Lampasas County on theft charges for a scam against a local bank. They allegedly opened an account, deposited a hot check, then withdrew funds the same day or next.
The 200 million lignite power plant at Alcoa Rockdale Works will start in June with about 40 crews on site and peak at 500 workers by early 1978. Most staff will be temporary, with a core 25 in management or admin roles, and many workers to come from the local area. The project will take 3 1/2 years, finishing in 1981, adding 150 permanent jobs and enlarging Alcoa Lake for cooling. The plant will be owned by TP & L and operated by Industrial Generating Co.

Rep. W. R. Poage the second oldest House member was reported in stable condition after four hours of surgery to remove a malignant tumor from his colon. The 77 year old congress man from Waco underwent removal of a five foot section of intestine and will have tests to confirm complete cancer removal. He is expected to stay in hospital at least a week.
Texas Rangers and Austin Police seek William Craig Riley in connection with the murders of Jack Cooney HI and Fred Cunningham Jr. He faces charges of murder, armed robbery and auto theft. Authorities warn he may be dangerous and urge public tips.
A Blackland Incom Growth program and a tour of the Blackland Research Center at Temple will begin at 8 30 a m Friday. The tour will highlight forage sorghum and small grain varieties sunflowers guar and sorghum drought tolerance and grass breeding. Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Houston President Jack Barton will speak after a Dutch treat barbecue lunch. Barton organized and coordinated the BIG program. Producers are invited to bring diseased plants and insect specimens for identification and control recommendations. Final exams at Yee High School will be held May 24 and 25. Buses run one hour earlier in the afternoon on exam days. Town students dismissed from Ben Milam and Ada Henderson schools at 2 30 p m.
