Newton Memorial Hospital fund nears $50,000 target

Barkemeyer Named Outstanding Student at Yee High

David Barkemeyer was honored as the outstanding student of American history at Yee High School in a special assembly. The award, first of its kind from the Sarah McCalla chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was presented by Mrs. James Kahler who praised his achievements and interest in American history and gave him a history book.

Yoe High seniors prepare for baccalaureate and commencement

Eighty six Yoe High School seniors are set for baccalaureate services at 8 p m Sunday at Yoe Field with Rev John Geiser delivering the sermon and Edwin Adams as valedictorian. Commencement Tuesday at 8 p m at Yoe Field includes Adams speaking on Science in Modern Society and Miss Richter on The Challenge in Education.

Heart Attack Fatal To W. J. Whatley

W T Whatley Jr 51 longtime Cameron businessman died of a heart attack Tuesday night at his Hoyte Community home. Funeral services set for 10 a m Thursday at Marek Burns Funeral Home with Pastor Don Fraiser officiating. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include wife Ima Jean Whatley his mother Mrs W T Whatley Sr two sisters Mrs H C Sherrard and Mrs A A Somerville. He ran a Cameron grocery for years and recently managed the Alcua Lake concession center near Rockdale.

Services Held Tuesday For Mrs Morgan of Milano

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in Milano for Mrs Walter Morgan 62 who died at Cameron Hospital after a 12 day illness. The Rev James Henderson officiated with interment in the Hirt Cemetery. Mrs Morgan had lived in Milano all her life and was a member of the Christian Church. Surviving are eight daughters including Mrs Truman Williams and Mrs James Ponder and Mrs Richard Ruzicka and Mrs Pat Gay of Houston, Mrs Gable Salinas of Ben vid ez, Mrs Frank Heinz of Milano, Mrs Clifton Pierce of Austin, and Mrs Ray Lewis of Gause. two sons George and Glen Morgan of Milano. two brothers, two sisters. 29 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Beard Contest Opens Western Week in Cameron Texas

May 16 marks the start of Western Week promotions in Cameron with a beard contest for four divisions led by the Cameron Saddle Club Show on July 16 at Wilson Ledbetter Park. Prizes will be awarded to winners. entry is 50 cents and the event aims to boost local interest with shaving and non shaving buttons and Western Week ties.

Ex-Rockdale Chief Named Cameron Police Leader

H. E. Johnson, former Rockdale police chief, was hired by Cameron City Council to succeed Chester Simons as police chief. In a 41 vote Johnson will take over duties this week while Simons remains on part time. Johnson has begun his duties this week.

Rita Moran Comforts Boy Before Operation

Miss Rita Moran of Cameron was photographed with 9 year old Leland Babineaux of Eunice at Charity Hospital New Orleans before his heart surgery. The operation required 15 to 20 pints of blood and was successful with Leland now home. Moran, a student nurse at Charity, will graduate June 13 and return to Austin for final studies August 28.

Council Approves Compromise on Street Width and Gas Rate Rise

Cameron City Council ends three hour session approving a 5.4 cent MCF increase for Lone Star Gas Co. and agreeing to gravel and surface North Fannin St from 18th to 22nd as two delegations seek assurances. Officials note 32 foot curb width and prior payments. a compromise to split costs for curbside graveling and paving is offered amid funding limits.
