A work session at the new Little League park is set for Saturday May 19 at 9 a.m. The 6th grade beginners band junior high band and Yoe High band perform a spring concert May 17 at 6 p.m. at Yoe High gym. Franklin hosts a flea market and auction May 19 on the courthouse square starting at 1 p.m. Auction details and contact provided.
Roy Perez, escaped from Milam County jail by removing bricks and climbing to the roof. He fell after a tree limb broke, suffering a broken leg, arm, and lost teeth. He is hospitalized in Temple after initial treatment at St. Edward. Also noted is a plan to expand the Salem Elm Ridge Water Supply to about 1700 rural customers in Milam County with 80 members needed to proceed.
Mrs. Phyl lis Swanton of the Red Cross Blood Center told Milam County leaders that blood is living tissue not for sale and praised volunteer donor programs. She outlined coverage for all residents, rising hospital fees to 18 dollars, and a July bloodmobile visit with Cameron’s quota now 73 units and whole blood components storage at the Waco center.
Young women ages 15 to 19 are invited to meet Monday May 21 at 7 30 p.m. at Cameron Community Center to join the Folk Fete Queen contest. Finalists compete June 7 and a queen crowned June 9 will reign through 1974. Contact Sharon Rubac or Mrs John Schigut or Mrs John Mosley for details.
Milam County commissioners in regular session discussed Buckholts residents petition to open West Second Street for public use and landowner housing, approved the request, and talked jail repairs amid another escape. The court eyed Magna Craft property for a possible new jail site and eyed a Brazos River boat ramp with an $80,000 PW funding target, while a landowner resists. A land tour was proposed and a swearing in ceremony certified the court to act as a board of equalization for June 4.
The Rogers Industrial Foundation, in its third meeting, nears formal organization with fifteen attendees. A constitution and officers will be chosen once membership hits twenty. Temporary leadership includes Wayne Cornelius as chairman and James Wentreck as secretary-treasurer. Memberships cost 50 dollars full or 10 dollars associate. contact James Wentreck at First State Bank in Rogers. The next meeting date will be announced.
Citizens may enter the Folk Fete parade by contacting Dana Kestenbaum by mail at Box 192 or by phone at 697-3095. The parade starts downtown at 10 a.m. Saturday June 9 and entries may include antique cars horses floats and other displays. Participants should inform Kestenbaum of their entry type.
City council medley includes several permits and bids as members debated action on East 18th Street lots with weeds and old machinery. A mall area renovation bid was sent to urban renewal engineers while bids for fire nozzles were opened and a street closure near 15 1/2 Street was approved.
Gary Fuchs of Cameron aged 16 won a special award from the U S Commerce Patent Office at the International Science and Engineering Fair in San Diego California He is a Yee High School junior with a project Formation of Egg Yolks He received a $25 bond and a certificate of achievement Attending the event were his sponsor Patsy Nance and his parents Also William Max Duncan a Copperas Cove youth won first place in botany at the Central Texas Regional Science Fair held at Baylor University in March The Baylor University regional director Dr Bruce Brown noted it was the first regional first place and patent award for their fair.
