James Jones, author of From Here to Eternity and about six lesser works, died recently at age 55. The Paris Review quotes reflect his view of writing as self exposure and a lifelong struggle, with experiences across Paris, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Dallas, Houston, and New York area.
A Friday night law enforcement raid on a Gatesville pool hall led to five charges against the owner. He faces three counts of selling beer in a dry area, one count of possession of beer for sale, and one count of possession of a controlled substance. Officers seized 73 beer cans, pills, and under two ounces of marijuana.
The Rosebud clinic grows with new addition along Ave E blocking the regular entrance temporarily. The project adds 3,650 square feet, more treatment rooms and offices, and a larger waiting area officials said.
Rockdale hosts the first CB Break by Channel Twisters CB Club from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 29 at Fair Park expected 2000 to 3000 attendees. The event features food fun and prizes with proceeds for the Rockdale Fair Association.

Georgetown school principal Richard Steinhauser warns that failure of the May 21 bond issue could force 35 to 40 students into each classroom. If approved, Northside would gain five classrooms and two restrooms, raising capacity to 550 from 432 current pupils.
Statistics show the county criminal caseload fell from 447 on October 1 to 344 on May 1. The sharpest reduction occurred between January and March, with 116 fewer cases, following the October elimination of plea bargaining.
Truman White, former Rockdale and Cameron police chief, held in Milam County jail on two counts each of removal of mortgaged property and theft by worthless check. Arrested in Wasco County Oregon while en route to Washington state, he remains jailed on a 17,000 dollar bond.
County commissioners adopt bobcats as eligible for bounty under the new system. Bounties set at 7.50 per animal, matching wolves and coyotes. Hunters must obtain affidavits from County Judge O B Harden, present ears for certification, and swear origin before a notary.
Milam County has produced crude oil since 1921. Last year output reached 213445 barrels at a daily rate of 583 barrels. The figures come from a Texas Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association report issued in Dallas.
County agent Bill McCutchen urges pecan growers to spray from May 14 to 20 for pecan nut casebearer and to mix in a good fungicide such as Duter or Benlate and zinc sulfate. He notes pecan crops are uneven nationwide with some orchards productive and others failing to set a crop.
Cameron building permits for January through April 1977 total 269 294 with six new homes planned and a Sonic Drive In project approved. New home construction accounts for 200 000 and six houses, while improvements total 6 500 repairs 3 794 and additions 19 000. The Sonic Drive In at North Travis and West 8th is set for 40 000.
Congressman Poage flatly denies circulating rumors that he will resign before the end of the 95th Congress. He says he was elected to serve his full term and has no intention of stepping down, adding he will announce future plans himself if he decides not to run.
The Cameron Folk Fete Arts and Show announces a weekend event at the Fiesta Grounds on June 1 and 12 with hours from 10 a.m. to dark Saturday and noon to dark Sunday. Exhibitors pay a 10 booth fee and contact Maxie Morgan at 1709 North Central Cameron Texas 76520 or 697-6168.
The renovated Aycock School in Rockdale will be dedicated as a human services center on Sunday May 22 at 2 p.m. The Aycock Center houses seven agencies including Public Welfare Mental Health Center Central Texas Council on Alcoholism Manpower St Johns Day Care Center Texas Rehabilitation Commission and the Driver's License office. Special guests and dignitaries will attend with a 1 p.m. tour and a post ceremony open house. The project was led by the Rockdale Community Action Association with Hill Country Community Action and the Texas Department of Community Affairs funding and HEWs Rural Mental Health Grant. The center is at 505 South Baxter Street with Laura Petty as association chair.
