New Classes Start For Adult Ed At Multiple Sites

County Schools Supt. Max McClaren said adult education classes for Royal Seating Corp Hensley Russell and Walled Lake Door Co workers start this week at Royal Seating Corp on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Materials will be provided through the ABE program. Additional classes are offered in Marlin Hearne Giddings Rosebud Lott Calvert and Cameron at the junior high and Blessed Sacrament.

Registration Set For First Grade at Ben Milam School

Registration for kindergarten and first grade opens May 15 per Schools Supt. D R Dodson. Parents should bring children to Ben Milam School between 8 am and 4 pm. Birth-cutoffs apply for first grade and kindergarten including some 5 year olds.

Bill Would Allow Jail Reforms By Cutting State Funds

A House State Affairs subcommittee advanced a bill giving the Department of Corrections power to force jail reforms by withholding state funds from non complying counties. Milam County could lose funds if its jail fails to meet state standards set by the bill. The Texas health department notified Milam in 1970 that its jail did not comply.

Central Texas to Split 755 279 for Job Programs

Seven central Texas counties may share 755 279 in manpower training and employment funds for the new fiscal year starting July 1. Funds from the U S Department of Labor pass through the Central Texas Council of Governments to support Neighborhood Youth Corps and Operation Mainstream under the Economic Opportunity Act. Programs aim to create jobs for youths from low income families and train workers as licensed vocational nurses nurses aides cashiers welders and farm equipment mechanics.

Whiteside Wins Award For Player Of Year

George Whiteside received the Most Valuable Football Player award at the Cameron All-Sports banquet at Methodist Fellowship Hall. He was a unanimous district 12-AAA pick and named to the Super Cen-Tex team, with Max Shuemate earning Booster of the Year and Pam Brashear named football sweetheart.

Final signup for the Minor, Little, and Pony leagues runs through 9 30 a m Saturday. Signups are at 1005 E 14 1/2 St with a 5 dollar registration fee. Skylab Studies Earth From Orbit With Pine Bark Beetle Focus

Skylab astronauts will study Earth from 270 miles up as part of the Earth Resources Experiment Program. They will use spectrometers and cameras to identify spectral signatures of crops forests minerals and beetle damage to aid forecasts crop surveys and resource location.

The Milam County Junior Broiler Show will take place Saturday May 12 with 51 4-H and FFA members bringing their top five broilers to Magna-Craft builds Cameron for judging by Marshall Miller poultry marketing specialist from A&M University. Yoemen Head For District Playoffs

Cameron Yoe men clinch the District 12-AAA north zone title with a 2-1 win over Belton Tigers on Tuesday. Ricky Sapp delivered the winning run in the ninth as three Yeomen pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts in extras. Games start 8 p.m. at Little League Field with tickets $1 at the gate and student passes 50 cents.

Pumper Team Wins Race At Brenham Meet

The Cameron Volunteer Fire Department men’s pumper team won first place at a Brenham event with Gary Simpkins as captain. The team list includes Jimmy Krenek Leslie Bruedigan Henry Horelica Alfred Dusek Jimmy Thompson and August Dohnalik. The women’s team finished third with members including Mrs. Jimmy Krenek Mrs. August Dohnalik and Mrs. Gary Simpkins.
