The Rockdale State Bank directors elected Harold M. Luckey as chairman of the board and Michael L. Allen as director and president. Luckey, a Rockdale native, joined the bank in 1931 and has risen from assistant cashier to president, with deposits growing from 295000 in 1931 to 22816000 today. Allen, from Marble Falls, came to Rockdale after leading Schertz Bank and Trust and now serves as vice president since 1976. He also serves on civic boards in Rockdale including the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.
The Yoe High band earned the UIL Sweepstakes Award after division one ratings in marching concert playing and sight reading. Director Jerry Bartley praised seniors and announced upcoming competitions in Lake Charles and a Friday parade with a Saturday stadium halftime event amid competition with bands from Belton Big Spring and others.
Plans for this year's Folk Fete include music food dancing and entertainment at a new location the Mexican fiesta grounds west of Cameron. The event opens Thursday June 9 with the Folk Fete queen contest at Methodist Fellowship Hall chaired by Mrs Regina Hairston.
Six burglary pleas, one DWI-subsequent offense plea, and four juvenile cases were disposed of in District Court Friday April 29 according to County Attorney John B. Henderson Jr. Samuel Henderson of Branchville pleaded guilty to an indictment charged.
The Youth Exposition Building in Cameron will be dedicated to Milam County youth Saturday. The 10 am opening and 10 30 am ceremony will feature 4-H FFA and FHA youth, with Dr. Daniel Pfannstiel as guest speaker. Exhibits livestock and refreshments will follow, inviting all county residents to celebrate and support the project.
City council approves the Chamber of Commerce Ladies Committee request to use library grounds for the fourth annual Fall arts and crafts show to include a flea market. They also discuss abandoning E 13th street segment, replacing street signs, cemetery land purchase terms, fire truck driver resignation, fogging machine bids, and airpark zoning appointments.
David Lott 24 was riding atop a large storage tank on FM 437 when he touched power lines and died at the scene. Justice of the Peace Reed Davis ruled the death accidental. Driver Frank Travino of Seguin was uninjured. Investigating officials were Davis and Constable Finis Voyles.
Fourteen trees were planted on Cameron school campuses funded by the Hilliard Thomas Memorial Fund created after Thomas death. The project raised 337 dollars, with Buddy Dulin noting nine live oaks two bald cypresses and three spruce pines were planted across campuses.
