Yoe High Band Crowned National Champion in Abilene Contest

The Yoe High School band returned from Abilene with a first division rating in concert playing sight reading and marching contests. Winners include drum major David Wade, oboe soloist Josephine Newton, cornet trio Grandy Baskin Lucille Stedman Frances Brogdon, and multiple soloists earning first and second division honors. The band collects forty one medals this year and earns automatic eligibility for next year’s national contest.

Savings Bonds Sales Hit Record in 1938 and 1939 Totals

Secretary of the Treasury Mor Genthaus announced savings bond sales through March 31, 1939, totaling 2 437 108 850 in maturity value with about 1 564 608 investors. Calendar year 1938 purchases reached 707 281 650, while Cameron office sales totaled 21 131 25. Approximately 22 000 post offices nationwide handle sales by mail or direct order from the Treasury.

Father Tom O Sullivan of St. Michaels Parish Burlington will speak at Ad Hall Cameron May 5 for seventh grade graduation. Jack Watkins Given Life Imprisonment

Jack Watkins formerly of Thorndale was tried in Madisonville district court under the habitual criminal act and received a lifetime sentence. Open House Draws 200 Pythians to Cameron Lodge

More than two hundred members and guests attended an open house at Milam Lodge No. 12h Knights of Pythias in Cameron. Texas Grand Chancellor Weylon C. Frasier of Waco attended with other high ranking Pythian officials as the lodge unveiled its new Castle Hall. The program featured talks on Pythianism and friendship plus sixty Diamond Jubilee Certificates awarded to new members by Chancellor Commander John W. Haygood. Refreshments followed the event.

A six inch centipede, brought by L. H. Hargrove, sits on display at the Herald office all week. Details of the find are unavailable as the publisher was away. In tropical areas centipedes can exceed a foot in length, though they are not highly dangerous unless provoked.

Copley Leaves Cameron Rotary for Seattle Lab Chemist Post

John M. Copley, longtime Cameron Rotarian and New Cameron Drug Company pharmacist, departs for Seattle to join Shell Oil Company as a chemist. He helped found Cameron’s early Rotary presence and was active in the club’s first year. He left Cameron Monday for the Far West.

Miss Catlie Young spent the weekend in Houston visiting her aunt Mrs. Sam Streetman. She was accompanied by Miss Lela Trice a Cameron school teacher and by Mrs. Childers and Misses Charlotte Stidham and Mary Ellen Cottle. John H McLerran, 81, pioneer resident of Cameron, died at his home at 6 am on a Wednesday in May 1939. He fell while rising from bed en route to a chair, striking his right temple on a rocker. his wife found him and summoned their son Ben.
