Carol Frances Moore, operator of the Seventy-Seven Drive-In Theatre booth, ran from the building about three minutes before the screen collapsed due to high winds and a tornado roared over Cameron. The incident at 9 pm damaged the screen, trees, and aerials, with insurance adjusters yet to determine costs.
In Cameron morning rain uprooted several trees and toppled many television aerials. Public works superintendent WD Bigbee reports branches blown from roughly one third to half of the city’s trees, leaving debris scattered throughout.
Milam and Williamson Counties survey crop and land damage after almost two weeks of rain. Little River near Cameron cresting at 99 feet flooded lowlands and barns, with cattle drowned near San Gabriel. Rockdale received about six inches of rain, damaging homes along Ham Branch Creek and damaging a Beechcraft at Coffield Air Port. County roads and bridges suffered washouts as floodwaters cut through FM 2005 and FM 486 abutment. Families were forced from homes as rainfall is expected to continue through June.
A rollicking senior class production at Yee High School entertained about 400 viewers as Franklin Moore as Tommy Stevens pursued Doris David, with Barbara Young, Nita Archer, Johnny Solomon, and Grover McCullin delivering lively support. The cast included Carol Sanders, Marge Horstmann, Jeff Burkes as Einstein, and Emory Camp as Roger Wilson in a spirited, humorous take on school life and prom drama.
Cameron Lions Club elected officers for 1957 58 by acclamation. Jack Prescott became president with Jimmy Wiggs as first vice president Ben Magness second vice president Richard Williams third vice president Tom Boyd secretary treasurer Rev Richard Bradshaw tailtwister and Bill Marek lion tamer. The club will assist the city chamber of commerce in a May 20 dinner for state highway department officials. Frank Luecke, Cameron Herald staff member, spoke on newspaper development and professional stature.
Cameron merchants announce Dollar Day with discounts across clothing, piece goods and household items. Shoppers are urged to compare with Central Texas prices and check inside Herald advertisements for the full lineup of bargains.
Cameron Chamber announces a broiler show with a banquet at Simon-George Hall on Saturday. Ben Magness says 200 growers and sponsors expected. judging by E D Parnell from Texas A&M starts at 10 a.m., public Showtime at 1 p.m., top prizes range from 2 to 15 dollars per class.
The Milam District Grand Jury noon Wednesday indicted Porifrio San Miguel in connection with the slaying of Felix Hernandez on or about March 9. It was the only indictment returned by the March term panel. The panel met four days over three weeks, hearing 13 witnesses on three incidents. Road conditions delayed a Monday session. The panel also heard information about transactions between Rep. Reuben Talasek and Cameron businessman Bassel Wilson. No finding was returned after the hearings.
Health officials warn that standing water after rains poses contamination and mosquito risks. Sanitarian Wimberly says sewage from overflowing septic tanks can contaminate pools and threaten typhoid or dysentery. Public Works Superintendent Bigbee notes planned fogging with Cameron’s machine and annual DDT spraying when weather allows.
VHS Principal J. R. Young announced Franklin Moore as senior class valedictorian and Carol Ann Sanders as salutatorian. Top 10 members all held above A averages with Moore at 56 grade average and Sanders at 5325 average.
San Marcos firms led by M. E. Ruby D B. Denney Jr and H H Construction submitted the low bid of 815468.45 for 12.2 miles of grading structures foundation and pavement from the Y south of Cameron to US 79 Milano and from one mile east of Milano east 31 miles. The contract awards the project to completion in 275 working days as announced by the State Highway Commission and C B Themes District Highway Engineer at Bryan.
Weather notes report 5.02 inches of rain fell in Cameron last week raising April total to 9.67 inches. This compares to 1.59 inches in April 1958, highlighting a dramatic weather shift.
