In a talk full of quips the author notes President Roosevelt calling Lindbergh a Copperhead and contrasts the war of words with an upcoming Martin Dies Senate appearance. The piece mocks political rhetoric and mentions opposition labeled by three dictators.
J. B. White editor of the Cameron Herald spoke in chapel on archaeology his hobby for twelve years. He defined archaeology as the study of antiquity from the present back to earliest limits of mankind and noted progress through cultures. He exhibited 40,000 artifacts showing flint tools and discussed Bell county and Central Texas as key archaeological areas.
James Leath departs Tuesday for Tampa Florida where he will enter the U S Maritime Commission school in St Petersburg and begin work experience as an apprentice seaman in cooking at the Waco NYA resident center announced by Marvin E Lamar NYA area director.
Funeral services for 88 year old Mrs Pheme lia Baggett who died at her Milano home Tuesday will be held Wednesday at 3 p m from First Baptist Church Milano. She was born in Bastrop county and lived in Milano 35 years. Survivors include a sister and three children Ed Baggett Mrs Annie Baggett of Milano Mrs Emma Tabor of Hearne and Mrs Laura Stevenson of Milano seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Interment Milano cemetery. Marek Burns Funeral Home in charge.
Frank Scofield announces state wide drive for Defense Bonds with county chairs named including Emory B. Camp for Milam. Milam committee to meet soon while newspapers are asked to publicize the sale starting May 1. List of district chairs spans Cameron Milano Maysfield Thorndale Rockdale Buckholts San Gabriel Gause Burlington and others.
Roderick Long 22, former resident, son of Mr and Mrs R J Long, died Wednesday night in Waco after illness. The family moved to Waco years ago. Cameron in past saw R J Long as Humble Oil agent. Mrs Long is sister of Mrs W E Gaither and Mrs Jas Watson. Funeral services held Friday in Waco.
The Rebecca Lodge meeting has been postponed to a more convenient time. The degree team from Waco was expected to confer degrees here on Tuesday night, but weather conditions caused the delay.
V M Shanman of the Butte town section in Cameron observed his 80th birthday Monday. Friends extended congratulations and wished him many more such days.
Martin Dies urged Texans to elect him to the senate to back his un American activities committee. He spoke on Cameron courthouse lawn accusing the CIO and strikes of aiding a Moscow backed front. He praised the American Legion and warned of a fifth column while planning future Texas travels.
General J. Watt Page denounces racketeers selling deferment or exemption insurance to Texas registrants. Swindlers, some impersonating officers, target especially colored registrants with cash fees for papers claiming to defer military training. A colored sergeant reportedly threatened victims with immediate induction.
Four high school boys including three football players were expelled after Senior Day when they signs on a bus garage. A petition to convene the Cameron School Board was circulated as parents and citizens hoped to win reinstatement. The board scheduled a hearing by night to hear charges and consider the boys' cases.
Turkish mobilization signals rising war tension as Germany nears the Turkish border. Reports claim Hitler and Mussolini quarrel over Greek spoils while Ciano and Ribbentrop meet as Italy is warned there will be no German concessions.
Cameron hosts a free cooking school opening Wednesday drawing about 200 women for sessions at 2 30 p m. Mrs W B Skelton notes the attendance and J K Bush of Community Natural Gas plans a photo. Miss Albertine Berry Home Economist of the Gas Co delivers lectures through May 1 and 2 sponsored by the Band Parents Association.
Mr and Mrs R L Batte Sr request the honor of your presence at the marriage of Patricia Batte to Mr J L Tullis Jr Sunday morning May 4 at 10 oclock at the residence of Mr and Mrs R L Batte Sr Julian Baskin of Houston visited Cameron this week for relatives and friends.
Gordon Baskin of Camp Baskin Insurance Agency announced a one cent reduction in Cameron's fire insurance key rate. Texas Fire Insurance Commission engineer L B Newsom said the change, prompted by an extended electric service line to the Community Public Service Co pumping plant, will save about $285 annually on city premiums. The Texas Power & Light Co and the water company supported the move, with extra pumping lines added to ensure operation if current lines fail.
Discussion on food and nutrition as essential to national defense occurred in Cameron in the District Court Room. County agent J. W. Stufflebeme organized the session with leaders from several organizations to align local plans with national defense efforts and food distribution.
Mrs J A Beesley of Dallas visited friends in Cameron this week, sharing social calls and local greetings during her stay in the area.
Superintendent A B Dunn of Sharp High School is hospitalized in Cameron with a stab wound to the stomach after a student, Wayford Gersbach 15, allegedly stabbed him with a long blade. An operation was performed and Dunn is reported resting well with a good chance to recover.
Milam county farmers can estimate 1941 parity payments under the AAA program as rates are set for cotton at 1.38 cents per pound, wheat at 10 cents per bushel, and rice at 32.4 cents per barrel. Conservation payments also apply, with specific rates for cotton, wheat, rice, peanuts, and soil-depleting crops, subject to overplanting deductions.
Commissioner B. M. McMillion of Buckholts traveled to Cameron on Tuesday for official business. He met local officials and discussed arrangements linked to his duties and district concerns.
