Pigs Used for Burns Treatment in Toronto Hospital
Surgeons at Scarborough General Hospital in Toronto use porcine dressings from specially raised pigs to treat severe burns. The method, developed by Brooke Army Medical Center, aims to bridge skin shortages when autografts are insufficient. Mrs Rejean Rancourt, 29, near Kapuskasing, survived extensive third-degree burns after a fluid-related accident and received over 100 square feet of pigskin. The team notes pigskin offers closer to natural coverage and is not a replacement for autografts.
