Thresholds for Grain Sorghum Insect Damage Updated
New thresholds outline allowable insect damage in grain sorghum for greenbugs and sorghum midge. Greenbug impact depends on plant size vigor growth stage moisture and presence of predators and parasites. Treat when damage reaches defined growth stages and monitor aphid parasitism as a collapse indicator. For sorghum midge, plant early and uniformly and apply treatments as bloom begins with 20 percent heads blooming. if adults persist 3 to 5 days, apply a second treatment. Systemic insecticides are ineffective against sorghum midge.
