Steel Indian Arrow Point Found Near Milam County

Durwood Bailes of Sharp found a steel arrow point used by Indians near the Henderson farm by Bryant Station bridge over Little River. It is the only steel point known in Milam County. Bailes gave it to his son, a collector with about 300 specimens.

Strange Cactaceous Growth Displayed At Herald Plant

A grotesque cactus like growth is shown at the Herald plant. Brought Thursday by L. W. Smith of Community Public Service Co. in Texas City. Smith traveled with R. W. Hester engineer for the company and picked up the specimen in Sealy Texas. The plant appears vegetative and desert like possibly from a semi arid climate carried by Brazos River waters. Its origin within the local area remains uncertain. It was found years ago in the Brazos by L. E. Kurtz of the Community Public Service Co. in Sealy at Felipe Township east of Sealy near Stephen F. Austin State Park.

Cameron Guardsmen Adopt New Uniforms in Drill Show

Cameron's National Guard unit Battery C 239th Field Artillery Battalion unveiled the new uniforms this week. Clarence Hanel won this week's appearance contest, with several other enlisted men close behind during Tuesday's drill period as Captain Michalka noted.

James M Pratt, 92, longtime Milam County resident and pioneer, died at his Rockdale home Thursday night March 18. Funeral services set for 2 30 p m Saturday March 20 at Phillips Luckey Funeral Home with interment at Sandy Creek Cemetery. He was grandfather of Marvin Pratt of the Cameron Herald.

Railroad hearing set for April to end passenger service

The Texas Railroad Commission schedules a third hearing on the Texas & New Orleans Railroad plan to discontinue passenger service from Waco to Yoakum. The session will be held in Giddings on Friday, April 2 at 10 a.m. at a Chamber of Commerce venue. Protests say loss affects baggage and express service alongside passenger trains.

Red Cross Drive Nears Cameron Goal

Woodrow Lowe, director of the 1948 Red Cross collection in Milam County, said Cameron’s $2200 goal was close with $627 remaining and committees launching a final canvass. Cash in the bank stood at $1572 as the drive date was extended. Lowe praised the county’s overall progress and compare favorably with others.

Don Slocomb Injured in Highway 77 Crash Near Elm Creek

Don Slocomb suffered a skull fracture a brain concussion and a broken left hand when his truck was struck by a car driven by L C Boyd of Walkers Creek on Highway 77 near Elm Creek. He was rushed to St Edwards Hospital in critical condition. Boyd escaped serious injuries.

W C Mobley 95 longtime Milano resident died Tuesday in John Sealy Hospital Galveston after a long illness. Funeral plans awaited relatives from Pittsburg and services are set for 2 p m Saturday March 20 at Green Funeral Home Cameron with interment in Milano Cemetery.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash Claims Raymond French Near Tanglewood

Raymond French, 19, of Oakwood Community west of Rockdale, died at 8 p.m. Sunday in Cameron's St. Edwards Hospital from injuries after a motorcycle collided with a horse on Highway 77 south of Tanglewood. He had brain concussion and was taken to hospital by a passing motorist. French lived with two brothers on the Sims farm near Tracy. parents moved here from Bastrop. Funeral set for Pfc Marvin Mode on Guadalcanal

Funeral services for Pfc Marvin Mode killed in action on Guadalcanal will be Friday March 19 at the Green Funeral Home Chapel in Cameron. Rev J D Stinebaugh and Rev L L Morriss will conduct with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mode, born August 24 1925 at Wilson Texas, was a native of Lynn County and son of Ollie and the late Ollie Mode. He arrived home via Santa Fe lines and will lie in state before the service. He served with the Sixth United States Marines and was killed January 23 1943. He left a large family including parents, grandparents, and siblings.

Clarkson Resident Gus Johns Buried After Shooting

Gus Johns 63 a Clarkson resident was found dead at his home Thursday afternoon after a forehead wound. Justice of Peace B G Rice presided over the inquest in Ben Arnold. Funeral services are set for 2 30 p m Saturday March 20 at Green Funeral Home Rosebud with interment in Rosebud cemetery. Surviving are his widow three sons Theodore Johns of San Antonio M Johns and Joseph Johns of Rosebud four daughters Noma Johns Clarkson Florence Lemke Seguin Jewell Hadelar West Columbia and Corawell of Rosebud. He was a well known Cameron figure and friends were shocked.

Former Cameron Resident May F. Smith Dies in Massachusetts

Mrs. May F. Smith, a former Cameron resident and wife of Frank Crawford who helped found Cameron’s Crawford bank, died March 8 at her daughter’s home in Longmeadow Massachusetts. Born May Fitzwilliam in Bloomington Illinois she later ran Highland Park Studios in Dallas after leaving Cameron.

Joe J. Hubnik, 30, war veteran, died Saturday night at McCloskey Hospital in Temple. He was a Milam County native, served in the Pacific, and had been ill. Mrs J D Ethridge Funeral in Marlow Oklahoma

Mrs J D Ethridge wife of J D Ethridge of Cameron died in Richmond Missouri at 40. Her body arrives by Santa Fe at 3 06 pm and funeral services will be held at Marlow Baptist Church at 4 pm Thursday with interment in the local cemetery. Green Funeral Home of Cameron arranged the services.
