Mark Sullivan reports in a New York paper that Grady Little sought NRA authorization to build a 20 ton daily ice plant in Cameron. Paperwork and hearings followed from December 1934 through January 1935, with transcripts issued and a Dallas hearing conducted.
Brooker and Watkins confessed to a series of robberies and burglaries involving homes garages stores and stolen automobiles. Brooker pled guilty to nine burglary and felony theft charges with a twenty year penitentiary term. Watkins received a sixteen year term and pled guilty to eight burglary and felony theft cases.
James A. Pickens 81 former Milam County resident and brother of Mrs. Ben McClellen of Minerva died at his Wallis Texas home on March 11. He lived in Milam 1874 to 1888, then moved to Wallis where he lived 37 years. Survived by his widow, sisters and brothers: Mrs. Ben McClellen Minerva, Mrs. Porter Stevens Taft, Mrs. Ada Sanders Minerva, Mrs. J. F. Storey San Marcos, Joel Pickens Colorado Texas, and John Pickens Minerva.
Mike Treadwell of Rogers was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to robbing the Skinner store in Rogers on January 28. Officers in waiting shot and killed Curtis Morgan of Cameron and captured Steve Lewis, a man with a long criminal record.
Alderman Joe D Bass announces candidacy for reelection to his current Cameron city post. He emphasizes commitment to Cameron’s growth, fiscal safeguards, and prudent spending. Friends credit him with推动 Wilson Ledbetter’s development and note his successful tenure.
J D Parnell Cameron Schools vocational agriculture teacher organized an evening school for farmers in Ad Hall with 23 members. Meetings will be held Thursday nights starting March 2 and continuing weekly. The March 28 session will cover disease among cattle.
Henderson Walker is named manager of the Cameron Comets as they prepare for Temple and Waco cup races. Leland Stedman becomes reporter and Bill Balhorn secretary treasurer. The club aims to rebuild the park fence and grand stand, invites rural players to workouts, and schedules will be announced soon. Knights of Columbus may form a Cameron team.
Temple licensed liquor dealers received permission to sell off their remaining stock with license fee considerations, and an $1000 excise tax noted. W C Jack Todd longtime Cameron resident and Beaumont business leader was named lieutenant colonel on Governor Allred's staff. Todd, manager of Brown Cracker and Candy Co and Allred campaign director in his district in 1934, has introduced Allred on visits to Beaumont and Wichita Falls.
R C Boswell of DeLeon Texas receives the first air conditioned refrigerator in the Texas Ice Carnival of the Air Contest. The prize promotes ice refrigeration via a weekly radio segment on the Texas Quality Group.
In Harris county court Judge J. W. Mille rules marble machines are games of skill not lotteries. The Texas case State of Texas Va. J. R. Birdwell was decided February 15 in county court at law. The attorney general has since deemed them games of skill amid statewide agitation and ranger raids.
Miss Gertrude Burstyn of Dallas arrives in Cameron to establish her millinery business called Gertrude Millinery Shop and set up shop for local customers.
Funeral services for Sam S Hefley 64 were held at 2 30 p m Friday March 15 1944 at the family residence in Cameron. He died Thursday March 14 after more than a year of illness. Hefley born January 25 1871 in Lexington Tennessee lived in Cameron since childhood. He served eight years in the Legislature from Milam County and was a pioneer in Cameron's motion picture industry and a former mayor. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev O C Acrey and Rev J Coy Williams led the rites.
