Two Prison Inmates Indicted on Income Tax Charges

Aubrey J. Merkel and Kenneth Jenkins, inmates at Huntsville State Prison, were indicted by a Houston federal grand jury on tax refund fraud charges. They allegedly filed false refunds totaling 206.19 for taxes not paid, with Merkel claiming deductions for 1951 and 1952 wages. Merkel began a 10 year sentence for assault in 1950. Jenkins aided Merkel in preparing and filing one refund.

Cameron Schools Host Education Week Visitors

During Texas Education Week from March 7 to 11 Cameron public schools opened to the public inviting parents and community groups. About 520 parents visited Ben Milam and Ada Yee High Schools with additional tours and assemblies. Lions Rotary Kiwanis clubs and student councils participated, totaling more than 600 attendees over the two days.

Stink complaint prompts council to press sewer enforcement

Tuesday night City Council reopened the North west stink issue raised by John Trocta. The group’s six signers, two within 30 feet of the sewer line, were criticized as impractical, yet the council urged enforcement or removal of the sewage ordinance. Officials discussed tying on laterals, filing a legal complaint, and potential penalties. Meeting Open To Press But No RECORDING

Judge Charles C. Smith told Cameron County Commissioners Court and the Cameron Herald reporter that no mechanical recording would be allowed in the court noting it is a court of record with sufficient minutes. He explained his view after joining the court.
