Mine Stoppage Brings Railroad Lay Offs

A two week coal work stoppage began at midnight, idling 16,275 railroad workers and 425,000 miners. John L. Lewis calls it a memorial to dead miners, possibly aimed at Dr. James Boyd’s Bureau of Mines appointment, covering pits east of the Mississippi River. The stoppage will cost miners about 68 million plus rail layoffs and broader production losses across industries.
