Cameron Volunteer Firemen sponsor a public fire prevention lecture and demonstration at the Methodist Fellowship Hall Friday March 17. The program starts at 7 30 p m with John R Rauch an expert from Texas A M College Fireman's training school leading the meeting. Volunteers completed three nights of training through the A M extension school.
Jesse Ray Owens 19 AWOL from Ft Gordon Georgia charged in JP court with theft from Mrs Oma Little home in Cameron. He is held in Milam County Jail on $5000 bond as Sheriff Carl Black notes possible links to other local burglaries.
The Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin will hear Hipolito Gonzales appeal on Wednesday March 15. He seeks relief from an 11 year murder with malice aforethought sentence from June 1966, citing trial procedure errors. Police report multiple recent burglary attempts in Cameron involving late evening intrusions and purse thefts.
Filing closes for Milan County elections with Buckholts having four candidates for three seats while Cameron, Milano, Rockdale, Maysfield Earnest Dodd and Gause boards show incumbents defended by challengers. County slate lists two year terms from Precinct 3 Rockdale Milano Gause and two incumbents seek re election. Election day set for April 1.
City Secretary verifies 136 signatures on a petition seeking a Charter election to decide if the police chief's job is appointive or elective. The City Attorney recommends an election at the earliest practical date after March 7.
A 23 year old Bangladeshi student A N M Shamsuzzaha, studying Agriculture Education at Texas A and M, visited Cameron to study cotton methods for a day before pursuing a second master’s degree. He aims to teach agriculture in East Pakistan where literacy is rising but earnings remain low.
Cameron Public Schools host open house tonight featuring the annual Science Fair exhibits at Yee High School. Public School Week closes with a charity Variety Show benefiting the Cameron PTA.
The ASCS State Committee extends release of allotments and filing for increases to March 17 for Upland Cotton, Feed Grain, and Wheat programs. Cotton producers must sign intention by March 17 to participate, with options to release, plant, or retain allotment. Open houses and a Regional Science Fair at Baylor are also noted.
Cameron Chamber banquet Tuesday March 14 features Robert Bob Seal vice president and industrial consultant for Republic National Bank Dallas as guest speaker. The event at 7 30 p m includes officer installation and the Mac Cullin Civic Award presentation twice noted.
August Kunz of Cameron jumped from the path of a Santa Fe passenger train at the Rusk Street crossing Sunday night after signaling his stalled car. The south bound train struck the 1965 Ford, three hours late, injuring Kunz and damaging the vehicle. Frank A. Rogers, the engineer, said Kunz tried to signal in time but could not avoid the collision. Kunz was treated for head lacerations and chest injuries at St. Edward Hospital and reported in good condition by Wednesday.
City officials announce enforcement of the stray dog ordinance after reports of rabid animals. Vaccination drive set for 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday March 11 in the City Hall lot. Untagged dogs will be seized, held for three days at the city pound beside the sewer plant, and destroyed if unclaimed.
No additional candidates filed by the March 4 deadline at City Hall leaving three Council seats uncontested. Incumbents Starrett Hickmann and Lawrence Zotz and former Cameron postmaster John Hays are listed. The election is set for April 4, first Tuesday. J. C. Marek will not seek re election.
