A Civil War rebel known as Manse Jolly rests at a marker in Anderson South Carolina. He escaped to Texas with other Rebels and later settled in North Milam County. Jolly drowned in Walker's Creek in 1869 at age 29.
An ad by a Chicago juice processor offers a copy of the 1961 Farmers Almanac as a premium with one evidence of purchase plus 25 cents. The promotion features quirky typographic stoppers and dated humor. it suggests the strange tone of a circa 4888 era ad.
Cameron Lions Club previews a two night minstrel at Yee High School Auditorium on April 14 and 15 at 7 30 pm with endman practice this week. Richard Williams chairs the program with Mrs B F Crockett leading the chorus and music for the show proceeds benefit the Lions Crippled Children's Camp and local civic projects.
The City Council voted to hire a Waco engineering firm to determine costs for a sewerage lift station serving the northwest Cameron area. They approved funds for materials to improve a Scout and Civic club house in Negro Park and for baseball diamond lights. City Hall parking passes may be issued to plumbers electricians and utility workers in downtown meter zones for the duration of work with two hours free, after which meters must be paid. Engineering estimates were sought to confirm lift station costs, last prepared years ago.
Temperatures in the Cameron area ranged from 39 to 85 last week with no rainfall reported.
The Herald traces the Civil War guerrilla Manson Sherrill Jolly’s grave at Little River Cemetery Milam County after a 40 year search. Jolly fled Anderson South Carolina died July 8 1869 crossing Walkers Creek and was buried with a simple marker describing him as Sacred in the memory of MANSON JOLLY aged 29.
April voting to choose city and school board members with no contest in Cameron. Incumbents Moseley Wied and Smith seek re election on April 4 for Places 3 4 and 5. Milano Buckholts Sharp Rockdale Thorndale and smaller districts also vote April 1. State level features a crowded field for U S Senate runoff likely after April 4. County appoints judges for 39 precincts with detailed listings.
About 300 Explorer Boy and Cub Scouts will host the Tejas District Scout O Rama at Cameron’s National Guard Armory on Saturday evening. The three hour event starts at 6 p m and features the Oglewannagi Indian dancers along with demonstrations and exhibits from Camero n area troops. Proceeds will fund district scouting activities and maintenance.
The Fort Worth District commander of the U S Corps of Engineers will meet in Cameron in March with Little River bottomland farmers to hear their views on overflow damages and needs. He believes workable solutions exist and follows a county resolution asking federal help, as lawmakers acknowledge ongoing Little River overflow and engineers survey channel rectification.
Two hundred Yee High School amateur scientists exhibited 136 entries in Technical and Research fields at the school gym. Winners included Janice Simecek in Biological Science and Lanelle Russell with Annette Dodd for geometric designs in math division. First place in physics went to Sam Lawhon for an Electrostatic Generator. First place in math and biology also noted, with multiple runners up and an 7th 8th grade winner Judson Smith for Work of Atomic Energy. First place winners advance to the statewide fair in Austin Friday.
E A Perrin was chosen chairman and Hinton Pruett named vice chairman by acclamation of about 75 of 90 members. Mrs K K Robbins elected secretary. A building committee and a public relations committee were appointed as the group advances plans for a new Cameron library funded by private funds.
An unidentified intruder broke into Papa John's Tavern in Cameron about 3 30 a m Sunday by breaking a back window and stole a rifle about 5 in small change and some cigarettes Police Chief Elvin Hoskins said the break in occurred Officer Brokenbush investigated the incident
Postmaster John Hays announced Cameron Post Office will have a remodeled entrance. A remodeling contract set at $1000 was awarded to Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co of Waco. This marks the third in a series of post office renovations begun in 1957.
