Truman to visit Waco for address at Baylor

President Truman will arrive in Waco around 10 a m Thursday March 6 to deliver a major address and receive a degree from Old Baylor University. He travels from Mexico City where he met with President Miguel Alemán and is the third U S president to visit Waco.

Veterans Service Center Opens in Rockdale by Thompson

Jess Thompson, former Milam County Veterans Service Officer, announces a free Veterans Service Center in Rockdale at City Hall room 202 open 8 am to 5 pm six days a week. He reports assisting 25 out of town veterans and invites any war claimants to seek help regardless of creed or address.

Cameron city issued 10 475 dollars in February for new construction. The largest permit went to Jack Cammer for a fireproof tailor shop at 208 West First Street between Lone Star Gas and Stewart Grocery. Materials shortages kept progress slow though activity stayed above zero.

Veteran Odom Becomes Farm Owner With FHA Loan

Ercel E. Odom, combat infantryman with the 36th Division, now owns a 256 acre Ad Hall area farm financed by a Farmers Home Administration loan. The Milam County native served with the 143rd Infantry, earned the Purple Heart, and returns to farming with FHA support and a 40 year repayment plan, with veterans given loan preference.

GI Business Class Opens Under Vocational School

Milam County Vocational School launches a distributive education program led by J P Brookshire with 12.5 hours classroom and 18 hours on the job weekly. The class, approved by the State Board of Vocational Education and Veterans Administration, is limited to 25 applicants and targets former service members.

Cameron School Board Rejects Hearne Camp Buildings

The Cameron School Board rejected the tender of 10 buildings from the Hearne prison camp. They planned to use them for negro schools and a gymnasium but moving and re erecting costs were too high. The War Assets Administration valued the buildings at about 75000 dollars while they were obtained for 744 during a given away sale. No reason was given for the rejection.

Southwestern Life Reports Record Insurance Growth in 1946

Southwestern Life Insurance Company posts 1946 in force of 580,047,004 and assets of 137,037,582, a gain of 67,345,654 in force and 14,679,067 in assets. C. F. ODonnell of Dallas, president, notes the company accounts for 190,000 Texas policy owners. The firm cites strong decade gains versus industry totals and mentions a new fire-proof annex at the Dallas home office. S. E. Brogdon represents the company locally.

Red Cross Membership Drive Opens March 3 In Milam County

The 1947 Red Cross membership campaign begins in Milam County on Monday March 3 with Rudolph Richter of Cameron named Roll Call Director. The county quota is 6000 dollars, slightly below 1946. The full 1946 list of community chairmen is renamed under new leadership, with many local names and districts assigned to Rockdale Thorndale Milano and other towns.

Milano Schools Acquire Four Army Camp Buildings

Milano public schools won four Hearne POW camp buildings for 1100 dollars from the Dallas War Assets Administration. Two cafeterias, a mess hall, and a latrine were sold to the Milano school board with discounts for educational use, per C N Townsend Jr. in the WAA office.

Funeral services for J. Dow Eplen held

Funeral services for J. Dow Eplen 62 a Cameron businessman were conducted at First Christian Church at 3 p m Saturday March 1 with Rev Roy D Holt officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. Eplen died of a heart attack at his home February 28 and leaves his widow and son Morris.

Cameron Postoffice Nears Century of Service

The Cameron postoffice marks 100 years of operation with J. R. Hays noting long service as postmaster. Only two former postmasters remain living Mrs Crawford and Lloyd Mitchell. Since inception about 30 postmasters have led the Cameron office.
