Why the Dollar Stands Strong in Foreign Exchange
The article explains dollar strength by comparing US gold reserves and paper money to Germany and other European nations. It notes the United States holds about one third of the world gold supply, three billion dollars in gold reserves backing four billion in currency, and a national debt around 25 billion dollars. It contrasts Germany’s weak gold backing, high debt of 50 billion dollars, and 80 billion dollars in wealth, plus war indemnity payments and a budget near eight billion annually, to illustrate why American money commands higher value in exchange and that similar factors apply to other European countries.
