Burlington Picnic Promises Speakers and Music

Burlington hosts its annual Sunday picnic on July 3 featuring candidate Tom Hunter at 2 PM and Ernest Thompson at 4 PM. A 6 PM chicken and sausage supper follows at Burlington Hall with Blue Jackets providing music and Rosebud high school band performing.

O'Daniel Expected in Cameron for Milam County Address

The Herald reports W. Lee O'Daniel, candidate for governor, is expected to speak in Cameron on July 7 after being invited by the Rockdale American Legion for a 4th of July program. He planned to address Beaumont on July 4 and then Cameron on July 7, with Fort Worth to confirm. The Austin crowd greeted him with over twenty thousand attendees, backed by the Hill Billy orchestra.

Statue of Ben Milam to be dedicated on July 17

The statue of Ben Milam on the courthouse lawn will be dedicated with elaborate ceremonies on Sunday July 17. Roy Law chairs the Advisory Committee which met to outline the program. Graham Gillis district judge will give the dedicatory address with Walter Woodul Lieutenant Governor and Coke Stevenson former speaker also speaking. Bryant Baker of New York is to provide an interpretation of the monument.

Big Saving on Loans Through Farm Bank

Federal legislation extends reduced interest rates on Federal Land Bank and Commissioner loans for two years. The 8.5 percent rate on Land Bank loans via national farm loan associations applies to installments before July 1, 1940, and the 4 percent Commissioner loan rate also lasts until July 1, 1940.

New School Building for Sharp Approved

Voters in Sharp Grouped High School District approved 30 year bonds totaling 30,000 dollars for a new building. The tally was 178 in favor and 67 against. The cost of the project is cited as 65,000 dollars with design by local architect J. E. Johnson.

Freeman Flossie Dies in Cameron Area Hospital

Flossie Freeman of Lexington died in a local hospital on June 21 after four weeks illness. Born June 6, 1919, she was a native of Lee county and niece of Mrs. Mary Radtke of Cameron. Survived by mother Emma Freeman and sister Merl Freeman, funeral services were at Tanglewood Church conducted by Revs Mathis and Morgan. Interment followed at Tanglewood Cemetery with Phillips Luckey directing.

Texas Traffic Toll Falls in May as Deaths Dip

Sheriff R M Kennedy announced from Austin that Texas recorded 127 traffic deaths in May, down from April's 94 and 41 fewer than May 1937. Injuries declined near 1,000 since April, with 1 045 hurt. Pedestrian deaths reached 36 as safety experts noted slower driving and careful crossing at intersections.

State Employment Service Opens Cameron Office Friday

The Texas State Employment Service will open headquarters in the Cameron Hotel Friday morning moved from Hearne to Cameron. The Cameron office serves Milam and Robertson counties and is funded by local authorities with Chamber of Commerce and City support. R C Moody will lead the Cameron office with Guy Roberson and Miss Emma Leo Mitchell also assigned. KE Spears oversees district operations and arranged the move.

South Elm Revival Begins July 1st

Rev. P. L. Caperton announced the annual South Elm revival will start Friday night July 1 and run for 10 days. Caperton will preach, Hilton Griswold will lead the song service, and Miss Ida Byrd Mayfield will play the piano. Services are daily at 10 a.m. and 8:15 p.m.
