Lobster Deepwater Traps Boost Gloucester Fishery
Gloucester fishermen now use steel deepwater traps to harvest lobsters 150 to 200 miles offshore in depths to 2000 feet. Each 138 pound trap costs about 100 dollars, supports up to 3,000 pounds, and crews of five operate 200 traps on two 150 foot ships. Deepwater lobstermen haul daily, yielding 5 to 10 pounds per trap, with up to 30 pounds from a single steel trap.
