Executive Committee Holds Milam County Meeting

The Democratic Executive Committee of Milam County met at the courthouse on June 19 to organize primaries and fundraising. Members listed include E A Flinn, W R Newton, H L Yeager, J O Newton, and others with roles for secretary and primary ballot positions. Party officers were assigned, ballot spots allocated, and candidate order drawn for county offices and state races.

Death of a Centenarian in local community

Saturday night Uncle Ike Ferguson, an elderly former slave long known to regional settlers, died and was buried the next day in the local negro cemetery. He reportedly lived over a century and served faithfully as a worker in his life.

Murder Reported Near Calvert City After Prison Release

James Hutchinson, a Black man just released from the State penitentiary, was found fatally shot on a public road near Calvert Texas Saturday night. Officers Jester and Walston investigate the case as the manner of death is a pistol wound to the brain.

Caught Thief at La Grange Arrested in Milam County

Deputy Sheriff Blaylock returned Sunday from Thorndale with W. W. Davit who was captured at La Grange by Milam county officers on a charge of stealing a horse from Arthur Young of Thorndale the previous week. The suspect is jailed here.

Pioneer Mary Jane Vaughan laid to rest in Milam county

Mrs. Mary Jane Vaughan aged 78 widow of Roland Vaughan and mother of J Harwell and Mrs Enoch Vaughan died at Mr Enoch Vaughan's home at 12 o clock Sunday night after moving from Alabama to Texas in 1861. She settled in Robertson county then Milam in 1875 and was a devoted Baptist with many friends. Her body rests in Little River cemetery.

Curry Box Supper Draws Big Turnout and Funds

The Curry Sunday School ice cream and box supper drew attendees from surrounding neighborhoods and Cameron. Candidates donated boxes which were resold, raising net receipts of 35 dollars to buy an organ for the school. Jeff Kemp announced buyers and offices, with Big hearted Jess Thach aiding the event. The gathering included a sociable crowd and a summary of the event noted the Sunday schedule and a welcome back for Dave Wilson.

War Veterans Pledge Support At Texas Encampment

The State encampment of the United Spanish War Veterans in San Antonio pledged support for President Wilson and Texas Governor Ferguson. Delegates from Dallas Paris Fort Worth El Paso Houston Galveston and San Antonio attended as officers elected for the year included A F Baushel Galveston as commander and W E Howard Dallas as senior vice commander. The 1917 encampment was announced for El Paso.

Mr C A Boeker Celebrates 49th Birthday at Jones Prairie

Mr C A Boeker of Jones Prairie turned 49 last Saturday June 17. A large gathering including his Bible Sunday School class of twenty five attended at his home for songs and well wishes. Marshall Woods left for Fort Sam Houston for recall to service.
