The San Gabriel River project in Texas draws strong support with $500 000 allocated for a water control study in the new federal budget, up from about $400 000 cited earlier. A Dallas reader quips about police traffic enforcement, noting a ticket for turning on two wheels while riding a bicycle.
Construction at 200 W Santa Fe extends Eastern Seed and Fertilizer to add a grain storage building and warehouse. Larry Jensen says the 359 by 200 foot site will support maize and milo trading with 20 car grain load capacity and aeration. A separate 40 by 42 foot unit will house display windows and retail of seeds fertilizers and chemicals. The firm also leases Batte Hickman offices and public scales as part of the expansion.
Jen sen said the project will add a complete retail farm service center and fertilizer to the firm’s operation. The expansion aims to handle maize in the upcoming season and will require additional employees. Eastern Seed began with fertilizer at its Cameron plant opened in December 1963 with a $40,000 investment.
Cameron plans a August 5 to 7 fair with a new downtown parade starting at 4 p.m. on August 5 and an Ugly Man Contest. Clubs and businesses can sponsor contestants for a $2 entry fee, with ballots collected in Cameron shops and the winner named Uglyest Man of 1965. All entry fees due by July 9.
Traffic on Little River Bridge was reduced to one way for about an hour last Sunday after a trailer truck from Ramsey Truck Line rammed into a car driven by Bill McIntosh. Highway patrolman Leroy Broadus said a flat tire forced a stopped vehicle, triggering the jam. The truck driver received a citation for failing to control speed.
District Judge W C Wallace handed down two probated sentences and one penitentiary term last Friday in Milam County District Court. Elbert Lee Barnett of Gatesville received two years in the state penitentiary for felony theft tied to a March 1965 offense. Amon Muston of Rockdale got five years probation for burglary linked to an April 1965 offense. Paul Ray Miller of Rockdale received a three year probation for felony theft. all three were indicted in April 1965 by a Milam County Grand Jury.
Cameron Jun ior Chamber members host a July 4 carnival at the National Guard Armory from 1 p m into the evening with kiddie rides games fish pond cake wheel and snow cones. CJ and The Jewels provide music at 9 p m while proceeds fund the Summer Track program.
Shell plugged and abandoned its deepest Milam County wildcat Nell Ross No. 1 located about eight miles east of Iline and four miles southwest of Gause. Depth reached 15230 feet with unclear Smackover discovery. Earlier No. 1 Adone Estate to 1440 feet abandoned in 1964. Site near Rice Schoolhouse area sees activity from Brown & Smith Oil sold to J A Tong & Associates. Mrs W R Schmidt visits Cameron from St Louis.
A ring of cigarette thieves targets Central Texas retailers. Milam County Sheriff Carl Black reports burglaries over weeks, including Rockdale Pigely Wiggly, where about 1 100 cartons vanished. Insurance firm estimates 2 500 loss. Gatesville grocery hit the following night.
Seaton, a 17 year old Cameron youth, was found guilty of assault with intent to murder without malice in the Leroy Jackson attack. The jury set three years confinement, but the judge suspended the sentence on good behavior. The one day trial began with jurors selected at 9 am and testimony by prosecution and defense.
Milam County grand jurors returned fourteen indictments on May 1965. Annie Louise Knight of Cameron faces assault with intent to murder one husband. Huntsville residents Claud Wallace and Frank Barfield indicted for jail escape. Samuel Morgan of Cameron and William David Williams of Houston charged with felony theft from May 9 1965. Freddie Wilkerson of Austin indicted for misdemeanor theft on May 3 1965. Lonceree McGowan of Milano charged with burglary and four forgery counts in April May 1965. Other felonies include Helen Stanford Temple April 20 1965, Hollis Edward Wright Houston February 8 1965, Christine Wright Houston February 8 1965.
Milam and Bell County commissioners will discuss maintenance of Elm Creek water control structures at a special meeting. Elm Creek officials from Cameron Chamber of Commerce Rotary Lions and local districts will attend, with Gilbert Kretschmar presenting on proposed structures and flood losses. Officials note 28 Bell County and 16 Milam County structures are proposed and up to 85 percent of losses could be prevented with upstream work.
Milam County resident H G Newton known as Gill despite being deaf for over 50 years and partially mobility impaired after a back injury and a stroke. He tends a large garden and 15 foot flower beds with his Lily dog by his side and a fox terrier in the chair next to him. His carvings and flowers fill his days though he no longer carves due to hand weakness. He lives alone near Maysfield with five children eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
