Original Washington Monument design by Lohert Mille
The proposed structure would cost at least £1,000,000 with designs submitted from many. The chosen plan by Lohert Mille features a circular building 250 feet across and 100 feet high, supporting an obelisk shaft 70 feet square at the base and 500 feet high. Funds gathered slowly as contributions stayed at one dollar per person, delaying construction until 1847.
