Tense Forecast As German Moves Stir Europe
Opinions ran 5 to 1 that Germany would attack Russia soon as border tensions rose hourly. London officials called it a German ruse to distract from an impending attack on England. Russia reported no warning, noting German troop concentration but not signaling alarm. Reports said Germany seeks Ukraine and Baltic states with 120 divisions massed to threaten the Soviet. A noon broadcast warned the situation worsening hourly. Russian troops massed along the border while withdrawals occurred at the Turkish frontier.
