H. F. Carter known as Bobcat Carter lived a hermit’s life near the Rio Grande and died in an Alpine hospital after years of trapping and killing bobcats for ranchers. He earlier earned fame as Prairie Dog Carter near El Dorado for wiping prairie dog towns with buckshot from a Long Tom. He welcomed visitors, offered coffee from a rock stove, and hunted to protect birds and quail.
